The Tuesday Book Discussion Group
The nonfiction work "Team of Rivals", by Doris Kearns Goodwin, will be discussed at the November 11th meeting of Killingworth's Tuesday Book Discussion Group. Winner of the 2005 Lincoln Prize for the year's best book about the Civil War, this "multiple biography" concentrates on Lincoln's capacity to take former opponents and forge them into a team whose task became saving the union.

Discussions begin at 1:00 in the meeting room of the Killingworth Library. Newcomers are always welcome.

Shortly after 9/11, I remember hearing an Associated Press reporter describe how he was in North Africa during the attacks on the World Trade Center and that he wanted to come home to the US through Paris. Unfortunately there where no planes flying to the US so the AP Reporter took a ferry to Greece to begin his trip to Paris.

While sitting in a cafe in Greece the owner of the establishment came over to the man and asked him, "Are you American". After telling the man that he was American the owner of the cafe sent all of his waiters to gather bottles of potent Greek wine and then proceeded to pour everyone in the cafe a glass. Read more

Anchoring the offensive line all year was Zach Machold, Jesse Warren, Wyatt Joyce, Jonathan Metsack, and Riley Byrne. The defense was led by Zack Roth with 15 tackles. Roth ended his season with a team high 149 tackles, 2 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles. Congratulations on a great 2008 season.

To the Editor:
I would like to commend Barack Obama on his historic election to the highest office in the land.

Also, I would like to commend George Bush on his eight years of service to our country through difficult times. In the future I would hope that Barack Obama's administration would continue the fight against terrorism and keep our country safe; as George Bush has done since September 11, 2001.

Also, I would hope that the new administration will provide tax relief for all working families regardless of income level and restrain from new spending. If the new administration can balance the budget, keep our country safe, and cut taxes it will surely be a brighter day for all of us.

HK Sports: HKHS Girls Soccer team's season came to an end today when they lost in the 2nd round of the Class M tournament to #3 ranked St. Joseph's High School of Trumbull. St. Joseph is last years Class M State Champion. Much to the dismay of the opposing coach, HK put up a terrific fight on defense and held their opponent off from scoring until the final minutes of the 1st half. St. Joseph scored in the 37th and 39th minute giving them a 2-0 at the half. HK continued its great defensive effort in the second half and goalkeeper Alyssa Hunt made some truly amazing saves. St. Joseph scored two more times in the second half to give them a 4-0 win over the Cougars. Alyssa Hunt made a total of 10 saves. Today's game as well as the entire regular season was a great team effort. This season for the Cougars has been plagued with injuries, but the team has been able to make the adjustments necessary to continually compete.

Under the guidance of Coach Richard Afragola, The HKMS Boys Soccer team played a very competitive schedule this year which included teams from North Branford, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, Nathan Hale Ray, Westbrook, Jonathan Winthrop (Deep River), and Jerome Elliot (Clinton). The Varsity record of 6 wins, 4 losses and 3 ties was not indicative of the exceptional ability of the players. Of the 4 losses (2 to Winthrop, 1 to Old Lyme and 1 to Elliot) the boys rallied to Old Lyme and Elliot in their rematch games. The JV team played exceptionally well this season finishing 9-2-2. For the most part, the team dominated the league. Many of the players will return as 8th graders next season.

Yes We Did!
By Kathleen Amoia

November 4, 2008 marks the day America voted itself into the twenty first century. We put aside old fears and a discredited ideology to rebuild our nation and our position in the world. And we did it with unprecedented voter participation.

For almost a decade, America seemed adrift and unable to get things done. With our heads firmly stuck in sand, we responded too easily to empty slogans and divisive tactics. It took a tsunami size financial meltdown to refocus our attention. And now that we're paying attention, it is imperative that we stay engaged on local, state, and national levels Read more
Welcome to day one.

The emotional intensity of the election is over. Now the real work starts.

On behalf of the Killingworth Democratic Town Committee I urge all our townspeople to keep the spirit of this historic moment alive by continuing your participation in the democratic process.

Killingworth needs you to stay informed, volunteer for committees, attend town meetings and involve yourself in the electoral process - as a candidate for office, a proponent of important issues, and a voter.

That is the basis of democracy and the beginning of our nation's new era of promise. What you do here will benefit our town, state, and the entire country. We have just seen the power of community organization. You can be part of it.

In our own small way, Killingworth is at a crossroads no less than America. Please take the energy so many of you - Democrats, Republicans and Independents alike - dedicated on the national scene and bring it home to our town.

This is our time. This is our town. This is our future.

HK Sports: The HKHS Volleyball team survived a 5-game match against Terryville in its second-round Class S match. Game scores were: 25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 21-25 and 15-9.

Erin Morarity made 19 kills and 17 blocks and Stephanie Venuti added 15 assists, seven kills and 25 digs. H-K will play at Grasso Tech (Groton) on Friday at 7 p.m. in its quarterfinal match.
HK Babe Ruth Round Up
HK Babe Ruth, Senior 16-18 team finished at 12-2 and as Champs of the Shoreline Fall Ball League. HK starting pitchers Chris Bova, Sam Barbuto, Matt Johnson and Mike Ossa mastered the league. Working with two strong shoreline catchers, Brian Ludington and backup Ryan Carey, each of them threw "gems" this autumn on the heels of their very successful 16-win June-July season.

3,4,5 Hitters Ludington, Ossa and Carey sparked the offense with home runs and were team RBI leaders. Johnson, Barbuto, Zach Kumnick, Chris Centi and Sean Zapatka were the base stealers, run scorers and key defenders. Connor Bremer continued to hone his excellent switch hitting and played corner infield positions with a graceful flair while reliable Billy Jette played solid defense wherever needed. The team relied on spot appearances from local baseball veterans Ben Uihlein, Robert Wigham and Jeff Waterbury. Younger players Garret Bremer, Gabe Kumnick and Nick Uihlein played in a few games and even contributed big RBIs in close games.

HK Babe Ruth Coordinator Hilary Kumnick wishes to thank "seasoned" coaches Steve Carey, Scott Centi and Paul Barbuto for their dedication to this group for the last three years. The coaches and families were treated to some great, defensive baseball from the local youth...some of whom are clearly destined to make their mark on college teams.

The HK Babe Ruth 14-15 team was Champion of their division too! The two area teams' feats were made all the more remarkable because they were forced to be "Road Warriors" with 100% of their games at away sites, due to the unavailability of a local, adult-proportioned ball field in the fall. Way to go HK Babe Ruth!

Next spring HK Babe Ruth will be forming up to four summer (June-July) teams; two 14-15 division and two 16-18 division. Each will be managed by adults with previous successful coaching experience. Teams face some of the best high school competition the shoreline offers. Due to the level of play, experienced players are considered first. Last summer, four of the seventeen teams in the 16-18 division had ten or more varsity high school roster players. Contact hkumnick@aol.com for player or team/league sponsorship information.

HK Sports: The HK Varsity Football team fell to 3-4 on the season after suffering a heartbreaking, 34-28, loss to the hands of the Ellington Knights on Saturday.

The day started out great for the Cougars as they used a Sal Zichichi 50-yard touchdown run and Greg Zak 15-yard blocked punt return for a touchdown to cruise out to a 14-0 lead just five minutes into the game.

Ellington answered back however, as they used two HK fumbles to climb back to even at 14-14. HK soon reclaimed that lead with a 70-yard Zichichi touchdown run that made it 20-14. Just before the half ended, the Knights crossed the goal line again to take a 21-20 lead into the break.

On their first possession of the second half HK rode a Mike DiGregorio 28-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion run to lead 28-21. From there it was all Ellington as they drained the clock on two long scoring drives, and only allowed HK to run a combined seven plays on offense the rest of the way.

Zichichi ( 12 carries for 172 yards and two TD's) and DiGregorio ( 11 carries for 87 yards and one TD) combined for 90% of the HK offense.
