Saturday, January 17, 2009![]() The Electors of the Town of Killingworth and all those qualified to vote in meetings of said Town are hereby notified and warned that a Special Town Meeting will be held in the All-Purpose Room of the Killingworth Elementary School on Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. to consider and act upon the following items of business. 1. Anderson Friday, January 16, 2009The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering a program for 2 - 5 year olds this winter. Using crafts, games, songs, stories, and creative movement and dramatics, children will celebrate the seasons and holidays. There will be a theme related snack and lots of time to explore and play together. Parent participation is encouraged. The class will meet on Fridays from 9:45 - 11 am at the old middle school art room. The fee is $20 per session ($18 each if you sign up for 2 more sessions).
Sessions are: 1/23 (Celebrate Snow); 2/13 (Celebrate Valentine's); 3/13 (Celebrate St. Paddy's); 4/17 (Celebrate Spring); May 15 (Celebrate Picnics). Please call the Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department at 345-8334 for more info. Kenneth Norman Voelkel, 48, of Anson, Maine, and Ft. Pierce, Fla. and formerly of Killingworth, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, in Moodus.
Born Oct. 3, 1960, in Middletown, he was a son of Norman Voelkel of Anson, Maine, and Linda Reff of Ft. Pierce, Fla. He grew up in Killingworth and went on to be a professional truck driver for nearly 30 years - a job he thoroughly enjoyed. In his spare time, he was also an avid boater, snowmobiler and Harley-Davidson enthusiast. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Debra Schoppee of North Anson, Maine; four children, Susan Voelkel of Ft. Myers, Fla., Reva Bennett of North Anson, Maine, Keith Wofford of East Hampton and Stephen of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; a grandson, Devin Cubow; two sisters and a brother, Rachel Nobles, Lori Voelkel and David Voelkel, all of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; best friends, Butch and Cheryl Hallowell of East Haddam; and numerous extended family members and friends. Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford Road, Colchester. A chapel service will be observed at 7 p.m. A memorial service will also be observed in Florida at a later date. Rand Thursday, January 15, 2009![]() The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is sponsoring a local Hotshot Contest on Sunday, January 18th (Snow Date: January 25th). This state-wide event challenges a player's speed, shooting, dribbling, and rebounding ability. Children ages 9 - 15 (Residents only) can participate in this contest at the Haddam-Killingworth High School Fieldhouse. Ages 9-10 will be at 11:30 am and ages 11-15 will be held at 12:30 pm. Each player will have one minute to shoot from "hotspots" placed on the court. The top scorer in each division will move on to the country level of the competition. The fee is $5 (must pre-register) / there will be a $5 late fee if you do not pre-register. Please register by January 15th!

Coach Korper praised Howell's efforts and hopes that this is the match that allows Howell to break through in his inaugural year of varsity wrestling. The Cougars dominated the match, 60-21. The $1,000 scholarships are open to high school juniors and seniors from Branford, Chester, Clinton, Deep River, Durham, East Haddam, East Haven, Guilford, Haddam, Killingworth, Lyme, Madison, Middlefield, North Branford, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook and Westbrook.
The scholarships are offered in creative writing, dance, instrumental music, vocal music, theater and visual arts.
