Thursday, January 29, 2009The 2009 Relay for Life Kickoff party was held Thursday, January 22 at the HK High School Auditorium. Event co-chairs Jim Schaefer and Karen Graham welcomed everyone, and Schaefer shared with the audience the goals for 2009. "We hope to have at least 70 teams signed up to walk laps; more than 1,000 luminaries to honor those who have lost their lives to cancer; and at least 95 survivors registered with fundraising in the 130K range," he stated.
Graham added "The Relay is not a race because there is no finish line until cancer is cured. When cancer strikes you or a loved one personally, it can leave you feeling hopeless - like a victim....The Relay for Life gives an opportunity to fight against that feeling, to offer hope to those who are fighting cancer within your community." ![]() Kellie Moskey The event will be held June 5-6 at the track on the campus of the Haddam-Killingworth High School. Contact the co-chairs by e-mail at HKrelayforlife@gmail.com to volunteer or go to www.relayforlife.org/hkct to sign up for the event, or call Alexis Begin at the American Cancer Society at 203-379-4827 "We hope to see you come help us celebrate, remember and fight back," Graham said. ![]() Teams register for the relay at the kick off meeting. Wednesday, January 28, 2009![]() Haddam-Killingworth fielded two youth football teams in the early '80s but lacked the town support to sustain the program. Since then Haddam and Killingworth's kids have had the opportunity to participate with the Tri-Town Warriors organization in Deep River. "Local youth football programs are essential to the success of your high school program", says Sal Morello of the state champion Cromwell Panthers. The CTYFL had two state champions this year: Class S Cromwell and LL Champion Glastonbury. Both programs attribute their success to the strong youth programs in their respective town. The new HKYFA Cougar program is receiving strong interest already and has the support of the HK High School program. HKYFA Board members include President Rob Steinhilper, Coaching Director George Callender and Cheerleading Director Sylvie Orlando. There will be an informational meeting and registration on Tuesday, February 3rd at 6:45 p.m. in the Haddam-Killingworth Middle School auditorium. For more information, please visit our website at www.hkcougars.com. ![]() ![]() The JV squad also notched another win to their record of 6-1, by the score of 22-16. Savino Tuesday, January 27, 2009![]() HC-HK Co-Chairs Hilary Kumnick and Tanja Moriarty encourage the public to attend and participate in this important discussion. One of our own local State Troopers remarked, "If people think Heroin doesn't exist in Haddam & Killingworth, they are wrong". The mission of HC-HK is to prevent and reduce substance abuse, other risky behavior, and, promote the wellness in the community. Community members formed the coalition (formerly the Prevention Council) in 1993 in response to the growing concern about the number of Haddam and Killingworth youth using and abusing alcohol and other drugs. A collaborative effort enhances and strengthens the process of identifying and addressing areas of concern. If Region 17 schools are delayed or canceled, the meeting will take place the following Wednesday, February 4 at 8:00 a.m. ![]() ![]() HK sophomore Emily Anderson goes up for 2 of her 11 points in the Cougars game against Old Lyme Monday night. Colonia Monday, January 26, 2009The lights have been delivered and over 900 feet of trench has been dug for the power cables as the HK Touchdown Club marches closer to its goal of installing stadium lights at the high school.
With help from both football team players and Connecticut Light and Power Co., power lines have been installed to connect to the base unit of the lights. Due to cost constraints, the original plan was re-designed to avoid an additional $45,000 expense. HK Touchdown Club members are still seeking donations toward the project. The lights will be used for home football, soccer and track events, as well as community-wide events. Donations may be sent to: H-K Cougars Touchdown Club Lighting Fund, c/o Liberty Bank, P.O.
