Anderson chipped in with an assist and goalie Teagan Ferguson recorded 4 saves for the Cougars who now have an overall record of 9-3 (7-2 in Shoreline Conference play). The JV team had their closest finish of the season, but still came out on top, 7-4, to remain perfect at 11-0. Stimulus Money Available to Shoreline Towns
State Representative Brian O'Connor (D-Clinton, Killingworth & Westbrook) announced that federal stimulus money is available directly to municipalities for energy efficiency programs. Clinton, Killingworth and Westbrook are slated to receive more than $152,000 from the federal stimulus package for energy efficiency projects. In order to secure the funding the towns need only provide the State Office of Policy and Management (OPM) with a plan outlining the proposed usage for the funds.

According to the federal Department of Energy, approved usage of the funds includes energy audits, retro fits, energy distribution, establishing financial incentives to encourage energy efficiency, or developing a conservation and efficiency strategy. Municipalities are able to utilize the money that works best for them to increase efficiency and conservation.

"This infusion of federal stimulus funds will help increase energy efficiency in our towns and hopefully bring more green-collar jobs to Connecticut," Rep. O'Connor stated.

Towns must apply to the Office of Policy and Management by May 26th in order to secure their allocated funds.

HK Sports: The HK Varsity Baseball team used a 5-1 victory over North Branford to get back on the winning track Wednesday. The game was tight early on as neither team could get much going offensively. With the score knotted at 1-1 in the fourth, HK started pulling away when a bases loaded walk gave them a 2-1 lead. The Cougars scored twice more in the fifth, and once in the sixth to round out the scoring.

Meanwhile, Steve Landell was carving through the T-Birds' line-up allowing only an unearned run to cross the plate. He went all seven innings, giving up five hits, three walks, while striking out a season high 12 batters.

Landell was also 2-3 at the plate with two runs scored and a stolen base. Sophomore Dan Milardo (2-3, 2 RBI, 2B) also had a good day for HK. The Cougars are now 10-4 on the year and will travel to East Hampton for a 3:45 contest on Friday.

The Cougars defeated the visiting Valley Regional Boys Tennis team on the H-K courts today, 5-2 . "This wasn't an easy victory for us, said Coach Pakus, this time we won those three set matches. Valley is a solid team and our guys worked hard for this victory. That match at 4 singles went to a tie break and Ravishanker played a great tiebreak to pull that one out. He was down 2-5 in that set and came back to tie the score at 6-6 and won the tiebreak. Armstrong...what can I say, he is so steady and forces his opponent to try a low percentage shot and comes away with the point...good court sense...time after time." He is easy to coach and deserves that win."

In #1 singles Co-Captain Patrick Gilhuly continued undefeated in Shoreline Conference play beating Alan Shortz in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) to remain unbeaten in twelve matches. Both Andrew McCurdy and Matt Waldman fell 6-4, 6-0; #4 singles Varun Ravishanker bested Matt Cotrill of Valley in a tiebreak in the third set (4-6, 6-2, 7-6 TB 7-1) to get the win. The deciding match in singles came down to the match at #5 where the Cougars' Grant Armstrong won a straight set victory (6-1, 6-2).

#1 Doubles went to HK's Kyle Kelsey and Robby Sheahan who won a thrilling three set match 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. The doubles sweep came when H-K newcomers Jon LeHane and Gabe Kumnick defeated Hugh Barry and Jimmy Tominson at #2 doubles (7-5, 6-1).

The HKMS Softball team improved to 5-0 on Wednesday with a convincing, 14-0, win over rival North Branford at home. HK sent 12 batters to the plate in the 3rd inning and took advantage of 4 hits, 2 walks, an error and a couple of fielder's choice plays with great base running, as 7 Cougars crossed home plate to go ahead 9-0. Every player got into the game for a great team effort. Kirsten Carlson went the distance on the rubber, scattering 4 hits over 7 innings, while fanning 5 T-Bird's with a great defense behind her to record her first shutout. HK travels to North Branford on Thursday 5/14/09 in a rematch.

HK Sports: The HK Girls Lacrosse team upped its record to 9 -2 (7-1 in Shoreline Conference action) with a, 9-5, victory over Morgan of Clinton at home on Tuesday. The Cougars' balanced scoring attack was led by Mikayla Litevich and Emily Anderson with 3 goals each, and Lindsay Gorman, Camille Kostek and Emily Pollack netting 1 goal apiece. Anderson, Gorman and Jackie Buttendorf each dished out an assist. HK's defensive pressure caused numerous Husky turnovers while goalie Teagan Ferguson recorded 5 saves. Under rainy skies, the HKMS Softball team took on an undefeated Elliot of Clinton at home on Tuesday. Kirsten Carlson went the distance for the Cougars, scattering 5 hits, striking out 6, as HK won in the bottom of the ninth inning by the score of 4-3. The Elliot Eagles scored in the first inning on a walk and an underthrow. HK answered in their half as Carlson walked, moved to second and third on a fielders choice and a wild pitch, scoring on a fielders choice to even the score. Elliot took the lead in the third, when their leadoff batter reached on an error and eventually scored. Elliot again threatened with a leadoff shot in the 4th over the head of HK center fielder, Gwen Plum, who ran the ball down with great speed. A relay from Plum, to shortstop Lauren McCann, and a base block and perfect tag by 3rd base player Sam Waskwowitz shut down the Eagles for the next 3 innings. HK came back in their half of the 4th, as a patient Taylor Burger(1-2) led off with a walk. Three consecutive bunts and an RBI by Kelsey Gorski tied the game at 2 apiece. Carlson shut down the Eagles in the 5th, while taking a 3-2 lead in their half with a 2 out walk by Casey Jackson, followed by a single by Burger and 2 more walks given up by Elliot. Elliot then held HK scoreless to go into extra innings. In the bottom of the ninth, Casey Jackson hit a screamer to center field for a triple with 2 outs. On the relay to third, the ball was overthrown, scoring Jackson (2-4 with a double and triple and an RBI) for the win. HK stands at 4-0 with two tough games against North Branford on Wednesday at home vs. North Branford, and away at North Branford this week on Wednesday and Thursday.

Colin Sledzik was the tough luck losing pitcher. Although he struggle at times, he battled through the entire seven innings, scattering nine singles.

The day looked promising for the Cougars in the first inning when they scored their only run. Steve Landell, who singled to lead off the inning, eventually scored on Dan Milardo's screaming line drive double. From that point on, HK only managed one other hit.

The Cougars fall to 9-4 on the season and will look to bounce back against North Branford on Wednesday at home.

The Cougars' Varun Ravishanker moved up to #2 and beat Portland's Jacob Ferrichelfi (6-1, 7-5). "I can't say enough about Varun's play, said Coach Pakus, he does whatever we ask of him and he does it well. Matt Waldman played a great match at #3 singles too, nearly flawless, in defeating his opponent in straight sets." Waldman won over Kevin Atkinson (6-0, 6-2). Grant Armstrong beat Portland's Tim Salecky (7-5, 6-4) and varsity newcomer Gabe Kumnick completed the singles sweep for HK by defeating Portland's Frank Fazzino (7-5, 6-0).

What Goes on in the Teenage Brain?
The "Together We Can" Coalition, an alliance of six communities working to prevent underage drinking will provide a revealing look at The Teenage Brain: Alcohol and Risky Behavior. The program will be held at Haddam-Killingworth High School Wednesday, May 20th at 7:00 p.m.

This multimedia presentation will be led by school psychologist and licensed professional counselor, Christopher Brown. Brown serves as the Coordinator for Special Education Support Services overseeing school psychology, social work, and counseling in the Hamden Public Schools.

"There is so much to learn about how alcohol affects a teenagers brain development," said Cheryl B. Chandler, Executive Director of the Youth and Family Services bureau. "We're fortunate to have Christopher Brown to help guide parents, educators and young people through this important information."

Current research has told us that underage drinking alters brain development and puts teens at risk for abusing or habitually using alcohol. The session will clarify the connection between the risks of teenage underage drinking, how it affects youth now and well into their adult years. "We hope this will help parents and their teens to talk honestly about how drinking can negatively affect their lives," added Chandler. Attendance for the workshop is not limited to Haddam-Killingworth residents. To register or receive more information, call 860-345-7498 or email Cheryl@hkyfs.org.

The towns of Chester, Deep River, East Haddam, Essex, Haddam, and Killingworth comprise the "Together We Can" Coalition. Funding for this partnership comes from the CT Dept. of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) through a Federal Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant.
Thank you from Helping Hands of Killingworth

On Saturday, May 9, our faithful letter carriers participated in the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive by collecting nonperishable food items from postal patrons on their routes and bringing the donations to our Helping Hands food pantry. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to all those who donated so generously and to the letter carriers who cheerfully picked up and delivered all the food. It was wonderful to see it all come in, especially the many items we were running low on. We also want to thank the Mortimer family for their enthusiastic help in sorting and shelving all the items.
Thank you everyone!
