Meyer Leads Senate Passage of BPA Ban
State Senator Edward Meyer, the Senate Chairman of the Environment Committee, led the passage in the Senate of a bill that will protect the public health - and particularly the health of very young children - by banning the sale in Connecticut of various products that contain bisphenol-A, known as BPA.

BPA is an industrial chemical present in baby bottles and certain food containers which has been shown in animal studies to have reproductive and developmental toxicity. It especially affects young children. There are non-toxic alternatives to BPA.

Beginning October 1, 2011, the proposed legislation bans the sale, manufacture or distribution in the state of infant formula and baby food stored in containers made with BPA, and of reusable food and beverage containers made with BPA.

"The research on BPA is very strong and very disturbing, and this bill makes great strides in reducing consumer exposure to this toxic chemical - especially among young children," Sen. Meyer said.

BPA is an industrial chemical used to make polycarbonate plastics, and it is found in such products as beverage containers, compact discs, protective food-can linings, plastic dinnerware and epoxy resins. BPA mimics the action of the human hormone estrogen and has been shown in laboratory studies to stimulate the production of prostate cancer cells and to cause breast tissue changes that resemble the early stages of breast cancer in both mice and humans.

Early-life exposure to BPA can also cause genetic damage. Researchers have found that BPA causes chromosomal errors at low levels of exposure, which can lead to spontaneous miscarriages and birth defects. Fetuses and young children are at greatest risk, since a young child's immature immune systems and his or her rapid development and different eating patterns make them more vulnerable to toxic exposures.

An amended version of the bill passed the Senate today on a 35-1 vote; it now returns to the House of Representatives for consideration.

HK Sports: The HKHS Girls Tennis team fell to North Branford, 1-6 yesterday. Although the 1-6 loss doesn't reflect it, HK played very well against an always-strong team from North Branford. Two matches were decided by third set tiebreakers and the other matches were close. This was a match that could have gone either way but North Branford has been strong throughout the season and continued to be today. Coach Phelan said, "Two more matches to play before Shorelines so we can still improve our record. I'm hoping that the long weekend will get everyone a chance to rest and revitalize themselves before the last matches and the Shoreline tournament".

The Boys Tennis team defeated North Branford, 6-1. H-K swept the singles play and split the doubles, winning the first doubles match and dropping the match at second doubles.

Patrick Gilhuly remains undefeated at #1 singles. Cougars Senior Co-captain Matt Waldman won in straight sets (6-2, 6-1). "Matt is peaking just as we finish our stretch run and head into the Conference Tournament. I couldn't be more pleased with his progress and, for that matter, his timing", said Coach Pakus.

Behind Rob Flynn's superb pitching effort, the HK Varsity Baseball team was able to grind out a 1-0 victory over non conference opponent Granby on Thursday. The victory was the first of Flynn's career, and he earned it as he went 6 1/3 innings allowing only two hits and two walks, while striking out four. He was aided by a gold glove caliber effort by the HK defense.

With Flynn cruising, HK finally was able to scratch out a run when Steve Landell roped a double to left to lead off the sixth. Sean Zapatka sacrificed him to third, which allowed Dan Milardo's deep fly ball to center field drive in Landell for the game's only run.

Flynn started the seventh and retired the first batter he faced, but a loss of control due to fatigue forced the Cougars to turn to Colin Sledzik for the save, which he converted by getting the final two outs with two runners on base.

The win puts HK at 13-6 on the year, leaving only Tuesday's game versus Old Saybrook for the regular season. The Cougars however will match up with the HK Baseball alumni on Monday for the annual Memorial Day game. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. and all spectators are welcome to attend.

The HKHS Softball team defeated Coginchaug, the #1 team in Shoreline, Thursday, 1-0. Lindsey Griswold pitched a shutout game and the Cougars scored in the top of the seventh to take the lead. Ali Rand made several great plays in the field to hold Coginchaug and the team turned in a defensive gem. Ali McFee singled in the top of the seventh and scored on Kaylee Normandy's hit to score the lone run. The Cougars are now 12-5 as they head into the final week of regular play.

To the Editor:
I recently had the pleasure of attending the Pantastic Steel Band Concert hosted by the Killingworth Women's Organization on behalf of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. The concert was very entertaining, educational for all age groups and fun. While I wasn't certain what to expect from a traditional West Indian Steel drum band composed of all women , the music from Trinidad and Tobago was great. The instrumental music was played on West Indian steel drums. It was very melodic, covered many artists, and styles of tunes. The artists included the likes of the Beatles and Jimmy Buffett among others. It was a concert for all age groups, enjoyable and very easy to listen to. It was unbelievable the harmonic sounds that the drums could produce that sounded like other instruments in an orchestra . While I did purchased a CD to listen too,( Neighborhood Music School of New Haven ) it would be nice to see this event GROW in popularity over time and possibly become an annual event and fund raiser for the Relay for Life each year. It was something folks of all ages should enjoy and would easily find enjoyable to listen too, while helping a very worthy cause "Relay for Life" in association with the Killingworth Women's organization. I hope to see and listen to them again next year. Thank you to all who were involved, particularly the Pantastic Steel Drum Band for appearing and the KWO for its sponsorship.

HK Sports: Under sunny skies at the HK football field on Wednesday, the HK Girls Lacrosse program honored its 2009 senior class with Senior Day festivities prior to the team's game versus Berlin. Outgoing seniors Jackie Buttendorf, Emma Cizek, Lindsay Gorman and Kristen Wendt have much to be proud of as the team has consistently improved and grown during their careers, culminating with this year's fantastic 10-3 record (with 3 games left to play), 2nd place standing in the Shoreline Conference (sweeping all conference opponents to date except Old Lyme), and qualifying for the CIAC State Tournament for the first time in program history.

When the game got underway, HK wasted no time getting on the board, scoring the first of the team's 11 goals just 36 seconds into the contest. Contributing to the final margin in the 11-2 victory were Emily Anderson with 5 goals and 1 assist, Emily Pollack with 3 goals, Lindsay Gorman with 1 goal and 1 assist, Jackie Buttendorf and Nicole Armenia with 1 goal apiece, and Camille Kostek dished out 1 assist. Goalie Teagan Ferguson turned away 8 Redcoat shots on goal. The JV team had to come from behind, trailing by 2 goals early, to win by the score of 5-2 and remain unbeaten on the season. The team travels to West Haven on Saturday evening for a 7 p.m. faceoff under the lights at Ken Strong Stadium.

In a closely contested match at HK, the Girls Tennis team fell 3-4 to Westbrook on Wednesday. HK took three out of the four singles courts in straight sets (Colleen Phelan, Caitlin Gilhuly and Nichole Brooks each won 6-0;6-0), While number four singles lost in the third set, one and two doubles lost, and third doubles lost in a third set. HK is now 10-5 and plays North Branford at home Thurs. May 21.

In Boys Tennis, the Cougars swept the singles matches defeating Westbrook, 5-2. Patrick Gilhuly remained undefeated at #1 singles. "Patrick played a good singles player in Jim Landino, who could track down pretty much anything Pat threw at him", said HK coach Rod Pakus after the match. Westbrook won both doubles contests with straight set victories over the Cougars.

Seventh grader Ciara Samuel got her first start of the season and pitched a complete game as HKMS Softball won at Old Saybrook, 14-4, on Thursday. Samuel gave up 5 hits and 2 runs in the first inning, getting a great defensive effort from the outfield as Gwen Plum fielded a single to center field and threw in to 3rd base trying to get the lead runner. Sam Waskowitz took the throw while the OS runner headed home. On a perfect relay to catcher Brennan Marczewski and a great block, the runner was called out at the plate. Samuel settled down after that, allowing only 2 more runs and 4 more hits (4 strikeouts, 4 walks) for the next 6 innings to pick up her first win, with a tremendous defensive effort behind her.

Kirsten Carlson led off in the EH spot for HK, going 3-4 at the plate with a walk, scoring 4 runs. Waskowitz (2-3 with 2 walks, 4 RBI's), Lauren McCann (2-4, 1 walk, 1 RBI) and Marczewski (1-3 with a sac fly, a double and 3 RBI's) led the offense for HK. Mackenzie DeRita was 1-1 with a walk and HBP with 2 RBI's, while Taylor Burger, Delaney Vumback, Jourdan Milardo, Erin Buckley and Maya Savino each notched an RBI. Every Cougar batter made it on base at least once in a great team win. The girls stand at 7-1, and play John Winthrop and Westbrook next week.

On Tuesday, HKMS Softball team put together 12 hits and took advantage of 15 passes to first base to beat a visiting Lyme-Old Lyme team by the score of 22-0. Kirsten Carlson (3 innings, 4 strikeouts, 4 walks, no hits) and Ciara Samuel (2 innings 2 strikeouts, 2 hits) combined to shut out the Wildcats. Sam Waskowitz had a 2 run triple and 4 runs scored to lead HK with 4 RBi's.

HK Sports: HK Girls Tennis defeated East Hampton at home Tuesday with a hard fought 4-3 victory. Coach Phelan said, "tough match up for HK today as we were missing Nichole Brooks at 3 singles which forces three players to play in different positions and puts added pressure on them to win. With three courts playing third sets and three tiebreakers it was a nerve-wracking afternoon. It finally came down to the one singles match. Both girls played extremely well and I was particularly proud of Colleen for fighting through to the end. Her play made the difference for the team today".

Game scores: Colleen Phelan v Erin Henriksen 5-7; 7-5; 7-5; Caitlin Gilhuly v. Rachael Nowakowski 6-1; 6-4; Ashley Griswold v. Audrey Saunders 3-6; 3-6; Brittney Timothy v. Reilly Price 4-6; 4-6; 1. Doubles - Casey Scully/Hannah Sturman v. Olivia Halverson./Michelle Berkenstock 6-0; 7-6; 2. Doubles - Anna Brundage/Kelsey Hawkins 7-6; 6-3; 3. Doubles - Jess Simms/Brianna Groves 6-3; 0-6; 6-7.

HK is now 10-4 for the season. They will play Westbrook at home on Wednesday.

The HK Boys Tennis team defeated East Hampton, 5-1, in a Shoreline Conference match played in East Hampton yesterday. Patrick Gilhuly, the Cougars #1 singles player remained undefeated beating Evan Boyce in straight sets. Gilhuly overcame being down 3-5 in the first set to win four straight games to take the set and the match (7-5, 6-1). H-K senior Matt Waldman defeated Matt Hull (6-2, 6-3) to take #2 singles while Varun Ravishanker defeated East Hampton's Jeff Loveland (6-1, 6-3) to win the match at #3 singles. Andrew McCurdy won an exciting three set match over Walid Ahmad at #4 singles (6-2, 6-7 TB 5-7, 6-1). East Hampton won the other three set match played at #5 singles with Jack Fidler beating Grant Amstrong (6-4, 5-7,6-3).

Town Meeting Approves Budget: Mil Rate Unchanged
Voters at the Town's Annual Budget Meeting unanimously supported the recommendations of the Board of Finance for the fiscal year July 1, 2009-June 30, 2010. The voters adopted an Operating Budget of $5,718.889 and Capital Expenditures in the amount of $632,000. Following the Town Meeting, the Board of Finance unanimously voted to set the mil rate at .021, reflecting no change from the 2008-2009 budget.

Board of Finance member Gwenne Lally commented that "kudos should be given to BOF member Hilary Kumnick" for suggesting the Board approach the Board of Education about immediately receiving a portion of the contingency fund reimbursement. Kumnick said the $700,000 received allowed the town to pass the budget without dipping into savings. BOF Chairman John McMahon said it was a timing issue. The town will receive its full portion of the contingency fund once the breakdown has been determined between Killingworth and Haddam.
Land Trust Annual Spring Program
The Killingworth Land Conservation Trust will host its Annual Spring Program on Thursday, May 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall at the Congregational Church. Join us as Mike Beauchene discusses how the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection monitors our ambient water quality and what you can do to help as an RBV (Rapid Bioassessment Volunteer).

RBV enables citizens to collect and interpret water quality data. The program focuses on the community of invertebrate critters - most of them insects - that live in streams. Which critters you find indicates the quality of the water. It's a fun way to spend family time while doing good science that's good for our Town and good for the environment. What a great way to welcome Spring!

Please join us at this event. It's free and open to the public. (Bring your kids! Bring your parents!) And, as always, we'll have refreshments to share.
HK Sports: The HKHS Boys Tennis team defeated East Hampton, 6-1, in a match played on the H-K courts yesterday. "We played a good overall match, but East Hampton had to play up because their #1 was out of the lineup said Coach Pakus and they had little time to prepare. We've had to do that a few times this season and it does create unexpected problems."

Co Captains Patrick Gilhuly and Matt Waldman led the Cougars: Gilhuly with a (6-0, 6-0) win and Waldman with a (6-1, 6-3) straight set win at #2 singles. Varun Ravishanker won (6-3, 6-4) at #3 singles and Andrew McCurdy was victorious at #4 singles with a (6-1, 6-0) win. #5 Singles went to East Hampton's Owen Jensen who defeated Mark St. Lawrence (6-2, 6-3).

The Cougars Doubles team of Kyle Kelsey and Robby Sheahan continued to demonstrate why they are one of the best doubles teams in the Conference by beating Kyle Doney and Andrew Briere (6-1, 6-3). The #2 Doubles team of Jon Lehane and Gabe Kumnick won a difficult three set match over Pat Maynard and Dave Quackenbush (7-5, 3-6, 6-4) to seal the doubles sweep for the Cougars.

HK Girls Tennis defeated East Hampton at the Bellringers' courts Monday, 6-1. The Cougars are now 9-4 for the season and play East Hampton at home on May 19th.

Game scores: Colleen Phelan 6-1; 6-3; Caitlin Gilhuly 6-0; 6-3 - Caitlin is 13-0 for the season. She beat Rachel Nowakowski of EH who was previously undefeated in Shoreline conference play; Nichole Brooks – 6-4; 6-3; Ashley Griswold - 5-7; 6-3; 6-2 - Ashley really turned this match around and played much more aggressively in the second set and sustained that energy for the third set.

#1 Doubles - Casey Scully/Hannah Sturman 6-3; 7-5; #2 Doubles - Anna Brundage/Kelsey Hawkins 6-3; 6-2 - nice solid win. They were competitive and aggressive throughout the match. The Cougar's sole loss came at 3 doubles where Juniors Brittney Timothy and Brianna Groves lost in a third set tiebreaker. Coach Phelan said, " Hopefully, Brittney and Brianna will correct their mistakes from today and turn the match around in tomorrow's home match". "I was concerned going into this match as I had been watching East Hampton's record and thought this was going to be a close match. I was surprised and obviously pleased with how well everyone played. Everyone was focused on their tennis and was driven to win today. Today's win qualifies HK for the state tournament so naturally everyone is very excited about that prospect."

Behind the dominant starting pitching of Steve Landell, the HK Varsity Baseball team was able to shut down the Valley Regional Warriors and come away with a 5-0 victory.

Landell featured some of his best velocity of the season as he struck out a season high 15 batters while overpowering the Warrior lineup. He only allowed three hits all day, two of which were the blooper/infield variety.

The offense supported Landell's efforts, as they exploded for a four run fourth inning. Sean Zapatka (3-3, run, RBI), Brad Nuhn, and Brian Ludington had consecutive RBI singles in the inning, while Mike Ossa's RBI groundout finished the scoring.

The Cougars have all but clinched a spot in the SLC tournament with their 12-5 record, but must wait for other teams to finish their conference schedules to figure out their seeding. Meanwhile, HK will host Ellington in a non-conference match-up on Wednesday at 3:45.

HK Sports: The Cougar Varsity Baseball team suffered a tough-luck extra inning loss to Westbrook on Saturday by a score of 1-0.

Junior Rob Flynn toed the slab in his first ever varsity pitching performance and gave HK one of the best starts of the year. Flynn went seven shutout innings, allowing only two hits while striking out seven. He went back out to start the eighth, but gave up a solo homerun to break the 0-0 tie. Colin Sledzik finished the game, but Cougar teammates and fans gave Flynn a nice round of applause for his efforts.

Offensively, HK could not get much of anything going, only mustering two hits and six base runners all afternoon. The Cougars are still alive for the fourth and final SLC tournament spot, but must win at Valley on Monday to have a chance.

HK Sports: After building a commanding, 6-0, lead by the third inning, the HK Varsity Baseball team was able to hang on for a, 6-4, victory over the East Hampton Bellringers on Friday.

All the Cougar fans that showed up to the park were pleased to see that they had front row seats to the Brad Nuhn Show. The senior left-fielder had an amazing day, going 4-4 with a 2-run homerun, two doubles, two runs scored, and four RBI's. Nuhn's personal fireworks display started in a four run HK first inning when he crushed a bases loaded two-out, two-run double to right center to start the scoring. Connor Bremer and Rob Flynn had RBI singles to account for the other runs. HK's last two runs came on Nuhn's mammoth two-run homer to left center.

East Hampton took advantage Cougar starting pitcher Chris Bova's control issues to claw back into the game. Bova, who got the win, threw 4 1/3 innings, striking out five, but also walked two and hit four batters. Colin Sledzik would come on to earn the save by allowing only one hit the rest of the way in relief.

HK improves to 11-4 on the season, and is looking to finish strong down the stretch to lock up a spot in the SLC tournament. They will host Westbrook tomorrow, Saturday, in a conference match-up at 10:00 AM.

HK's Patrick Gilhuly continues unbeaten as HK defeats Coginchaug 4-3 in Boys Tennis action. "Coginchaug was in every match, but it was good doubles play that made the difference for us, said HK's Coach Pakus after a four hour Shoreline conference match on the Memorial School courts today. Four of the seven matches were decided by tiebreaks...I can't remember the last time that happened."

Gilhuly won 6-2, 6-2 to remain undefeated in Conference singles match play. Matt Waldman, the Cougars' senior co-captain won in straight sets (6-3, 6-2). "That was probably the best match Matt has played this season", said Pakus. Both doubles matches went to a third set tiebreak to decide the winners. In #1 Doubles, HK's Kyle Kelsey and Robby Sheahan came back from a set down to win 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 TB 7-5. The #2 doubles match was also decided in three sets with HK's Jon LeHane and Gabe Kumnick winning 6-3, 1-6,7-6 TB 7-3 to swing the match into the win column for the Cougars.

The HK Girls Tennis team defeated Old Saybrook, 7-0 Friday. Colleen Phelan won 6-2; 6-4; Caitlin Gilhuly won 6-1; 6-0; Nichole Brooks won 6-1; 6-3; Ashley Griswold won 6-2; 6-4; #1 Doubles Casey Scully and Hannah Sturman won 6-3; 6-3; #2 Doubles Anna Brundage and Kelsey Hawkins won 6-3; 6-3; #3 Doubles Brianna Groves and Meg Wright won 6-4; 6-4.

Coach Phelan said, "I was optimistic about winning this match since we beat OS 5-2 the first time. I was pleased to see Colleen turn her game around against Alissa Rothman to put Colleen's record at 7-4. Caitlin played as well as she always does to extend her winning streak to 10-0".

"Overall, I was happy with the way everyone played today. They all took something away from the match against Valley earlier in the week and applied it to today's match and they all came out winners. I think our players are getting a better understanding of the game and the strategies used by different players and doing a better job of changing their strategies to win those games".
