Mid-Shore Express Bus to Connect Old Saybrook and Middletown
The Estuary Transit District (ETD) announced the launch of the new 9 Town Transit Mid-Shore Express bus service. The Mid-Shore Express will provide daily bus express bus service between the shoreline and Middletown, thanks to new funding through the Connecticut Department of Transportation and the federal New Freedom Initiative.

The Mid-Shore Express, which begins June 1, 2009, provides five round trips each weekday between the Old Saybrook Train Station, the Essex Park and Ride lot, the Chester Park and Ride lot, Chester Center, and Middletown. Stops in Middletown will include Middlesex Hospital and the Social Services Office and the Middletown Area Transit (MAT) bus terminal. This express route offers a travel time of just 45 minutes from Old Saybrook to downtown Middletown for just $1.25.

This new service will provide access to much more than downtown Middletown through free connections to other public transit services. Passengers looking to travel around Middletown or to Meriden may do so on MAT buses. Those wishing to travel to Hartford or the surrounding region may do so on CT Transit. Both services meet with 9 Town Transit (9TT) at the Middletown bus terminal and will accept 9TT transfers.

Richard Cabral, Chairman of the ETD Board of Directors and Killingworth First Selectman, commented "The Mid-Shore Express closes the gap that has existed between the shoreline and Middletown; providing improved access to social services, medical services, government offices, and jobs".

"With the existing connections to New Haven's S Route bus and New London/Norwich's Southeast Area Transit bus system, this final link to Middletown and Hartford will give shoreline residents incredible mobility options and improve our state's public transit network", said ETD Executive Director Joseph Comerford.

In addition to providing shoreline residents with improved access to services and jobs, the new link creates access for Middletown and Hartford area residents to shoreline employment centers such as the Tanger Outlets at Westbrook and the Clinton Crossing Premium Outlets, and the Chester Industrial Park. It also provides a direct link to Shoreline East Commuter Rail.

The Estuary Transit District provides public transit service to Chester, Clinton, Deep River, Essex, Killingworth, Lyme, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, and Westbrook through its 9 Town Transit service. Connections are provided to New Haven and New London/Norwich bus services and Shoreline East Commuter Rail.

Route maps and schedules are available online at www.estuarytransit.org or by calling 9 Town Transit at 860-510-0429.

HK Sports: The HK Varsity Baseball team suffered a tough-luck, 7-6, loss to Morgan Thursday night in the SLC tournament. HK led almost the entire game by a healthy margin erupting for five runs in the fourth inning, the highlights being two run singles by Brad Nuhn and Rob Flynn, and a RBI double by Connor Bremer. Morgan scratched a few unearned runs to make it 5-2, but a Steve Landell RBI double in the top of the sixth seemed to give the Cougars a comfortable lead at 6-2.

It was the bottom half of the sixth that saw the game fall apart for HK. Three errors and a pop fly that got lost as it left the reach of the lights allowed Morgan to score five runs, four of which were unearned. That news was unfortunate for Landell, who started on the hill for the Cougars and pitched well. He went six innings, allowing only four hits and a walk, while striking out six.

HK will now wait and see who they will match up with in the State Tournament, with the time and date TBA.

The HKHS Softball team finished its regular season with Senior Day Thursday. Lindsey Griswold, Allie Rand and Rachel Normandy were our honored seniors. HK beat Westbrook 8-2 to finish the season with a 15-5 record! The SLC start Friday. Good luck COUGARS!

In its final regular season game, the HK Girls Lacrosse team traveled to Old Saybrook and overwhelmed the Rams, 19-6. Coach Heather Ferrer made frequent substitutions as eight different Cougars got on the board led by Lindsay Gorman with 9 points (4 goals, 5 assists) and Emily Anderson with 8 points (6 goals and 2 assists). Other offensive contributors were Emily Pollack, Nicole Armenia and Giana DeNisi with 2 goals each and Camille Kostek, Mikayla Litevich and Angie Narducci scoring as well. Kostek added 2 assists while Pollack dished out one. Teagan Ferguson finished with 6 saves in goal. The team wraps up its record setting season with a final overall record of 13-3. In Shoreline Conference play, the team finished in second place with a record of 8-2. The Cougars will next compete in the CIAC Class II State Tournament and will be seeded third when the pairings are announced on Monday and will be hosting a 1st round game late next week. Check back at the beginning of the week for game details. The Junior Varsity team finished their season with an impressive 14-1 overall record by virtue of another come-from-behind victory over Old Saybrook today, 6-3. The JV team went undefeated (9-0) in Shoreline Conference play this season. Congratulations to all of the players and Coach Ferrer.

Wettish Fields Move Forward With Bid Award
The Killingworth Park and Recreation Commission came before the Board of Selectmen Tuesday evening to present its budget numbers for the construction and irrigation plans for the Wettish athletic fields. PRC Chair Dan Colonia said the construction bids for the four fields, access road and parking lot construction were opened late last month and the low bid was from Venuti Enterprises for $758,751.27. The PRC asked the Board of Selectmen to approve that offer pending approval by the Board of Finance and at Town Meeting.

PRC member Eric Auer presented the numbers for the irrigation plan. He said all the fields could be set up for irrigation for $133,000. There would be a 10x12 building constructed to house the utilities and some equipment storage. Auer said that PRC member Glen Johnson, also a local engineer, has offered to give a discount on his engineering services for the full-sized baseball field planned for the Wettish property. Auer said he hoped that Town could take advantage of having the large equipment on site to move along the baseball field plan. According to Colonia, Johnson has already offered to engineer the Sheldon Park redesign pro bono.

First Selectman Richard Cabral will take the figures to the Board of Finance on Tuesday, June 9 and with its approval will call a Town Meeting to get the final approvals. At that Town Meeting, residents will also be asked to accept the $400,000 STEAP Grant from the State that will be used for the construction of the Wettish baseball field and the renovations at Sheldon.
Congratulations to the Killingworth Park and Recreation Commission, Board of Selectmen, Wettish sub committee, past and present, for achieving the almost impossible! Tuesday night at the Board of Selectman meeting, the funds, plans and hard work were acknowledged by granting the funding for the new all purpose fields to be constructed at Wettish. Everyone has worked so hard on getting the project this far. Congratulations to EVERYONE and let's continue on and see the first new fields in 25 years (or longer) built. Volunteerism is still very much alive and doing well in Killingworth.

Susan Otto
Former member of Killingworth Park and Recreation Commission

Editor's Note: Funding for the Wettish fields must be approved by Town Meeting. The Board of Selectmen approve it first, take it to the Board of Finance for approval and call the Town Meeting.

HK Sports: HK Girls Tennis celebrated the end of the regular season and Senior Day with a decisive 7-0 victory over Cromwell Thursday afternoon at HK. HK finished the season at 11-7 – it's best finish in three years. The team is heading into the Shoreline Tournament this weekend and the state team tournament beginning Monday.

All seven courts swept in straights sets with Senior Captain Colleen Phelan winning 6-0 6-4 at #1 singles; Sr. Co-captain Caitlin Gilhuly 6-0 6-0 at #2; Sr. Nichole Brooks 6-1 6-0 at #3; Ashley Griswold 6-3 7-5. # 1 Doubles seniors Casey Scully and Hannah Sturman 6-1 6-0; #2 doubles senior Anna Brundage and sophomore Kelsey Hawkins 6-0 7-5; #3 doubles Brianna Groves and Brittney Timothy 6-2 6-2.

"This was a great way for us to end our season and give us confidence going into the Shoreline Tournament this weekend," said Coach Fiona Phelan. "I think a couple of our players have the potential to go to the semi finals and maybe to the finals. It will be an exciting weekend."

Colleen Phelan is the #4 singles seed for the Shoreline Tournament. Caitlin Gilhuly heads into the tournament with an impressive 17-1 record!

The HKHS Boys Tennis team beat Cromwell, 6-1, in a match at Cromwell today guaranteeing the Cougars, at least, a share of the Conference title. The Cougars finish the season 18-2. If Old Lyme defeats Valley Regional in another Conference match, HK would be the outright Shoreline champion for the eighth time in the last nine years. Should Valley beat Old Lyme, Valley Regional would share the 2009 title with the Cougars. "Our guys reeled off eleven match wins in a row against some tough competition and they have earned any honors that come their way. I'm so proud of our players and their achievement of a goal they established for this themselves as both a team and as individual players, said Coach Rod Pakus. If I could, I'd nominate our entire team for player of the week honors!!!"

HK swept the singles matches and split the doubles matches: Patrick Gilhuly completed regular season match play 20-0 with a decisive win (6-4, 6-1); Senior Captain Matt Waldman recorded his 13th singles win of the season with a straight set (6-0, 6-0); Kyle Kelsey won his match at #3 singles (6-0, 6-3) while Grant Armstrong moved into the 4th singles slot to win his 10th match of the season. HK junior Tyler Montesi completed the singles sweep with a close win (7-6 TB 8-6, 7-5 at #5 singles.

The Cougars Jon Lehane and Gabe Kumnick moved into the #1 doubles slot and defeated Nick Loveland and Steve Richheimer of Cromwell (6-0, 6-3). Cromwell won the #2 doubles match with Dave Dionizio and Naveed Daneshmand defeating the Cougars freshman duo of Kenny Duffy and Jon Turner playing in their first varsity match by the score of (6-1, 6-3).

Heads up base running was the key to the HKMS Girls Softball win over Westbrook on Thursday. The Cougars produced 8 runs on just 5 hits, with all players contributing. Kirsten Carlson was 2-4, with an RBI and 1 run scored. Sam Waskowitz (1-2, 2 walks, 2 runs scored), Taylor Burger (1-3, and RBI and 1 run scored) and Lauren McCann (1-3, 1 RBI) led the HK offense. Casey Jackson notched an RBI, while Gwen Plum crossed the plate twice. Erin Buckley and Tiana Field each scored once for HK to win 8-1 at home. Carlson was stellar on the mound, scattering 4 hits over 6 innings (5K, 3BB). Ciara Samuel pitched a great job in relief, retiring the side in the 7th, striking out the number 8 and 9 batters, while forcing a ground out to the number 10 batter to end the game. HK is now 9-1 with a home game on Tuesday (6/2) against East Haddam.

HK Sports: The HK Varsity Baseball team ended the 2009 regular season on a high note by defeating the Old Saybrook Rams, 12-5. The win gives the Cougars good momentum heading into their first round SLC tournament match up with #1 seed Morgan.

HK wasted no time getting on the board as they posted a 3-0 lead after one inning. They followed that up with a six-run second that sucked the life out of Saybrook with the score at 9-0. That was all the offense they would need as Colin Sledzik gutted his way through the complete game victory. The HK offense pounded the Rams for 12 hits, while being patient enough to draw seven walks. Brian Ludington (3 RBI), Rob Flynn (2 RBI), and Sledzik (2 RBI) all had multiple RBI games. Steve Landell blasted his second homerun of the year, a solo shot in his third at bat.

The Cougars are 14-6 on the season with their game versus Morgan at a time to be determined on Thursday. It will either be a 3:45 or 7:00 start.

HK Girls Tennis fell to Lyme-Old Lyme 0-7 on LOL's Senior Day. HK is now 10-7 for the season and faces Cromwell at home for the season finale. All seven courts lost in straight sets with Caitlin Gilhuly putting up the biggest fight of her season to suffer her first loss of the year to Jenn Ross 6-7 (7-5 in the tiebreaker); 1-6. Ross's only previous loss was to Gilhuly.

"This was a tough day for HK," notes Coach Phelan. "We knew going in that LOL always has great players and we faced some stiff competition. What we weren't expecting was the loss for Caitlin. Everyone was shocked, but Caitlin really played her heart out. She's a tremendous athlete and very competitive. Loss or no loss she's had an outstanding season!"

The surprise of the day came with the first time match up at second doubles with Brittney Timothy and Kelsey Hawkins paired together for a trial-run for the Shoreline Tournament on Friday. Although HK lost 4-6; 0-6 they performed very well in their new situation.

Playing under the lights for the second game in a row, the HK Girls Lacrosse team beat the host Berlin Redcoats, 9-7, at Sage Park on Tuesday evening. Backup goalie Fran Mastria got her second start in as many games and made 7 saves, 6 of them coming in the 2nd half. Four different Cougar players scored twice including Lindsay Gorman, Mikayla Litevich, Emily Anderson and Emily Pollack. Jackie Buttendorf also netted two points for the team with a goal and an assist. Other assists were dished out by Gorman (2), Litevich, Anderson and Camille Kostek. HK's record stands at 12-3 as the team prepares for its final regular season game at Old Saybrook on Friday at 4 p.m. The JV squad erased a late 2 goal deficit to come away with a 5-4 victory at Berlin as they upped their record to 13-1 on the season.

H-K Boys Tennis Defeats Old Lyme 4-3, Gilhuly continues undefeated, another win for Sheahan/Kelsey in Doubles.

HKHS Boys Tennis notched its 16th Shoreline Conference win of the season by defeating Old Lyme, 4-3. "Our doubles play turned this one in our favor, said Coach Pakus as Old Lyme took three of the five singles matches. We had to win both doubles matches to pull this one out and the guys dug down deep and played great matches to get the win."

In #1 singles Junior Co-Captain Patrick Gilhuly won(6-1, 6-2); Senior Co-Captain Matt Waldman was beaten(6-1, 6-4); Varun Ravishanker won a decisive match at #3 singles (6-2, 6-1). Yale Grad Students Offer Suggestions for Improving Transfer Station
Students from the Yale School of Management recently presented its final report to the Board of Selectmen regarding improvements to the Town's transfer station. The report was the result of a five month study done at the request of the Board. As part of the SOM Outreach project, first-year graduate students are broken into groups of four or five and go off and do a consulting project for a nonprofit organization in the greater New Haven area. The work is pro bono and not for credit.

The students were asked to conduct a thorough, balanced analysis of all the interlocking factors relating to the transfer station, answering such questions as: Should the town replace the transfer station with "curbside" pick-up? Should the town move the transfer station? Should the town consolidate with a neighboring town and share a transfer station? Should the town institute a Pay-as-You-Throw system to encourage more recycling? Should the town institute fees for disposal of special items (e.g., tires, Freon-containing appliances) How can the town improve enforcement of regulations on use of the transfer station?

The final report included six recommendations that either have financial or environmental benefits or both. The first and most promising was to consider a regionalization of services with Haddam. Haddam was recently forced to close its transfer station and residents will soon have to use private curbside pick-up services. The SOM students recommended that a reasonable fee be charged to Haddam residents to offset the additional equipment needs and service charges. They determined that a fee of around $40 would offset the costs to Killingworth and be a significant cost savings for Haddam residents as incentive to travel.

The SOM students determined that the transfer station would need to open one hour longer for every 250 Haddam residents issued a sticker to avoid overcrowding. The station is currently open 16 hours per week for the 4,000 stickers issued.

Another recommendation included optimizing the service channels at the transfer station by simply repainting the lines and having attendants wave people up to the front of the drop-off area. The SOM Students also recommended looking into solar panels to offset the transfer station energy use, instituting a recycling incentive program, looking into the annual repair costs to the compactor to determine when it would be most cost effective to purchase a new one, and charging for more costly services such as bulky waste.

The detailed report will be reviewed by the selectmen and the recommendations will be considered individually and as a whole. The Board thanked K. C. Bennett, Amy Burghardt, Josh Earn, Seth Magaziner and Neal Reiter for their hard work and wished them well in their future endeavors.
