Youth & Family Awarded Drug Free Communities Grant
Gil Kerlikowske, Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), recently announced the awarding of $21 million in new Drug Free Communities (DFC) grants to 161 communities across the country. The Healthy Communities-Healthy Kids Coalition, a program of Youth and Family Services of Haddam Killingworth, Inc. from Haddam and Killingworth, CT was one of the grant recipients, and will receive $625,000 in DFC grant funds to involve and engage their local community to prevent and reduce alcohol and other drug abuse among youth.

"Efforts to keep our youth drug free are critical to healthy communities here in Haddam and Killingworth," said Cheryl Chandler, Executive Director of Youth and Family Services. "The Drug Free Communities Program recognizes the great potential of the Healthy Communities Healthy Kids Coalition (HCHK) to help save lives of youth. This new funding will allow HCHK to mobilize and organize their community to prevent and reduce substance abuse."

"The Drug Free Communities Support Program bolsters individuals and groups across the Nation that are improving their communities by preventing drug abuse," said Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration Acting Administrator, Eric Broderick. "SAMHSA is honored to play a role in this innovative program, which has done so much to promote well-being, hope and feelings of empowerment among so many young people."

Gil Kerlikowske, Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and President Obama's "Drug Czar," said, "Evidence shows that communities receiving DFC funding have lower instances of youth using tobacco, alcohol and marijuana. I commend the coalitions like Healthy Communities Healthy Kids, who work tirelessly to prevent and reduce youth drug use across the Nation with the aid of DFC grants."

The Drug Free Communities program is directed by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) in partnership with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The DFC program provides grants of up to $625,000 over five years to community coalitions that facilitate citizen participation in local drug prevention efforts. Coalitions are comprised of community leaders, parents, youth, teachers, religious and fraternal organizations, health care and business professionals, law enforcement, and the media.

The 161 new grantees were selected from 417 applicants through a competitive, peer-reviewed process. To qualify for matching grants, all awardees must have at least a six-month history of working together on substance abuse reduction initiatives, have representation from 12 specific sectors of the community, develop a long-term plan to reduce substance abuse, and participate in the national evaluation of the DFC program.

Board of Selectmen Respond to Worker's Complaint
According to the New Haven Register, the Board of Selectmen Monday formally responded to Tax Collector Michele Nuhn's complaint about alleged sexist remarks made by Republican primary candidate John Samperi.

The BOS unanimously approved a letter addressing the issue to Samperi and said they will use whatever legal action is necessary to maintain a Town Hall workplace that is safe and free of hostility.

Nuhn submitted a letter of complaint to Republican Town Committee Chairman David Denvir alleging Samperi made rude comments to her and about her in the presence of tax clerk Jeannette Clegg during a visit to Town Hall in mid-July.

Samperi, who attended Monday's meeting, denied making any of the comments attributed to him. Click to read more about the allegations and the actions taken by the Board of Selectmen.

For the September 15th Killingworth Republican Primary, I endorse Rich Cabral and Fred Dudek, two proven leaders and the best candidates for Selectman. I also endorse Linda Dudek for Town Clerk, and Claudette Lagasse for Town Treasurer, because they are best qualified. In the aggregate, these four dedicated public servants have served in dozens of elected and appointed positions, totaling more than a century of service. I urge all registered Republicans to turn out and vote for them September 15th and again in November. Click to Read Full Letter

The Carousel Connection
Everybody wins when children enjoy the colorful carousel at Lenny and Joe's Fish Tale in Madison. Each year proceeds from the ride go to area nonprofit organizations. This year, a $500 donation was made to the Killingworth Library as a result of the carousel ticket sales during Library Week, July 26 through August 1.

The Killingworth Library Association staff, Board members, and patrons, thank Lenny and Joe's for this generous contribution.

Having been raised in the charming little town of Litchfield, I am quite familiar with small-town politics, but it appears a couple of Killingworth citizens have taken it to ridiculous, actually laughable, heights. Ms Baron blasting Mr Samperi for not having read Goodwin's mass-media publication, and then actually telling us what Lincoln would find acceptable in a particular political situation, sent me rollicking! How presumptuous and funny. Reading Goodwin hardly makes a scholar.

But, here is Killingworth, acreage between two major highways, I-80 and I-81, with no discernible center or sense of "country town". Traffic moves through this town at high speeds, including traffic on "country" roads. Some roads, such as Roast Meat Hill Road, which happens to be the road on which I regrettably live, has idiots driving at up to 60 mph. What is done? Nothing. Is there any concern about a neighborhood or quality of life for families living on these roads? No. And Roast Meat is only one of many such roads in this town with this problem. It is, indeed, the Wild West. Click to Read Full Letter

To the Editor:
Rob Artus's letter about the mess at the Killingworth Circle and the responses to it are wonderful examples of the way Killingworthies see a problem and step up to do something about it. I want to let everyone know that the plan all along has been for the Killingworth's Evergreen Garden Club to take over the landscaping after the completion of the circle. DOT had specified a lag time, but I expect that the club will do it's magic next spring. Meanwhile, I have been in contact with our state senator, Ed Meyer, about the absurd forest of signs that has overgrown the circle, and we will work with DOT to prune it back. I have also spoken with Tom Strong, who designed the unique signage on the Merritt Parkway that manages to meet federal and state requirements in an original way. He suggested several measures we might be able to take that would improve the view, and I will take those up with DOT.

In response to the letter from Rob Artus regarding the traffic circle I do have one suggestion.

For years my father has been involved with a group of retirees called The Essex Ancient Order of Weeders. This is an informal group is of retired individuals who maintain all of the various traffic islands throughout on a volunteer basis. I know my dad (88) has gotten the enjoyment of companionship, the love of serving the town and the working on the gardens over perhaps the last 25 years.

Maybe a similar group could be formed in Killingworth? I would be more than happy to put someone in touch with him for more information.

To the Editor
I agree with Mr. Artus's assessment of the new Killingworth Circle, albeit with one exception. It has cut down on speeding, and there is now an orderly traffic flow. For that, I am grateful to the designer.

Regarding the cosmetics of the circle, I am in full agreement with Mr. Artus that weeds and salt-poisoned plants are an eyesore. Also, he is correct that the curbs already look shabby and should be removed. Count me in with any town folks who will work together to improve the plantings and curbs.

Sincerely,
Lynne Pauls Baron

Voters:
I have recently heard it said that you should vote for a person who is less qualified or even unqualified just because they belong to THE party of your liking. Huh? That makes as much sense as racism, sexism and the other "isms" we have been trying to stamp out for centuries. Let's not bring our town down by following the example set by national politics in our country. Vote for the most qualified person in each job that needs to be done in Killingworth. Fahgetabout da politics.

As a Killingworth Republican I was disappointed that John Samperi, Jeff Yazmer and others have chosen to mount a primary challenge to the party-endorsed candidates, Fred Dudek, Linda Dudek, Richard Cabral and Claudette Lagasse. The caucus overwhelmingly rejected Mr. Samperi and his unapproved slate. The costs required to conduct a primary will cost Killingworth between $4,000 and $5,000, adding to citizens' tax burdens in this weak economy. Click to Read Full Letter
