![]() The funding will be used to enhance public transit services in the Estuary region. 9TT plans to purchase two new larger buses for its popular Shoreline Shuttle route to increase capacity. The current buses frequently are filled to capacity, leaving some passengers to wait for the next bus. The new buses will also include features to improve passenger comfort and security. Delivery is expected by Spring of 2010. Bus stop enhancements will be another focus of the ARRA funds. 9TT will install bus stops along all four of its routes to more clearly identify bus stops and routing. In addition, some higher traffic bus stops will receive covered bus shelters to provide seating and protection from the weather. The improvements will greatly enhance the bus riding experience in the Estuary region, with installation expected to be completed by fall of 2010. The funding will also allow 9TT to upgrade its scheduling software for its Dial-A-Ride and off-route services. 9TT plans to purchase a system that will improve efficiency, on-time performance, and trip appointment accuracy. Plans include using real-time GPS data to more accurately and effectively dispatch vehicles. A new website is also being developed with the use of ARRA funding. 9TT plans to have a state-of-the-art website, giving visitors improved access to public transit information in a user-friendly format. 9TT plans to add features such as online ticket purchases, interactive maps, and online chat to answer questions. "We are thrilled to be receiving these stimulus funds. They will go a long way in improving our ability to provide transit services to the Estuary region and our citizen's access to it" said Joseph Comerford, Executive Director of the Estuary Transit District. The Estuary Transit District provides public transit service to Chester, Clinton, Deep River, Essex, Killingworth, Lyme, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, and Westbrook through its 9 Town Transit service. Thursday, October 01, 2009![]() ![]() Richie Havens Then you remember the singer who opened the show - Richie Havens - and how he played his guitar and sang for nearly three hours. The throng was spellbound and when he let loose with his song "Freedom", the crowd didn't want to let him go. Since then he's built a following world-wide, seen his albums coast onto Billboard's charts, and watched his rendition of "Here Comes the Sun" reach into the Top 30. This star for 40 years will take you back in time in his December 12 performance in the HK Middle School auditorium and the producer, The Killingworth Lions Club, expects a sellout crowd. According to spokesperson Bruce Dodson, a club vice president, the proceeds are to benefit The Parmelee Farm on Route 81. Dodson said that it is Richie Havens' interest in preserving and nurturing the environment - particularly among young people - that persuaded him to appear in this benefit of the Parmelee Farm activities. Mr. Havens has agreed to sign autographs and meet people after the concert, so this will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet this legendary icon - truly a memorable experience. Tickets may be ordered through www.parmeleefarm.org. Ticket prices are $25 and $35, with a limited 'golden circle' of $45 seats. All seats are reserved. The Killingworth Lions Club is a service organization dedicated to addressing needs in our community and encouraging programs which will improve the quality of life in Killingworth. The Club supports many local organizations and believes the Parmelee Farm could become an important resource to our Town as a site for the already successful Community Garden, and as a potential site for the Historical Society, town picnics and fairs, agricultural events, concerts, trails and educational programs, some of which may be linked to our local schools including the adjacent Middle School. Lion members serve on the Parmelee Farm Steering Committee with other dedicated townspeople, and Club President Terry Doyle has made supporting the Parmelee Farm a priority for the Club. By Michelle Becker I'm a newcomer here, a NYC transplant who is still trying to get her sea legs. But, on Tuesday November 3rd, when I head down to the Killingworth Elementary School to place my vote, I will do so with some understanding of the challenges that we face if we are to bring about positive change in our community. For a small New England town that relies heavily on volunteerism, the challenges are real. Speaking as one of many volunteers -- I sit on a couple of committees --I am frequently reminded of the qualities that are most valuable for public service, because I see them at work across the conference table in meetings and in action, on the ground, in our community. Rob Artus For many years, Haddam-Killingworth has fielded a strong men's soccer team for over-40's. We play in a competitive league and last year we were actually top of the table. It is a terrific group of local players, all friends, great camaraderie, and some pretty good skills too for a bunch of old guys. We play against many teams statewide and our games are Sunday mornings at 10:00 am - home games this year are at the new Middle School. We are now in need of a goalkeeper who can bring experience, skill and most of all commitment. The league rules allow the goalkeepers to actually be 35 years and older, so this broadens our search pool. We are also welcoming skilled and experienced applicants to tryout for the team in all field positions. If you feel you can bring a strong game, commitment and a good sense of humor, please read on.
