The Directors of the Killingworth Land Trust would like to inform town residents that the annual cranberry harvest at our bog on Pond Meadow Road, postponed from last weekend, is now formally cancelled. While the standing water on the bog has now subsided, more rainy weather is expected in the coming days. With what was already a low number of berries available for picking, we feel the best course of action is to now take the year off, and plan for a better year next year. The Land Trust does have plans for active management of the bog, which should benefit the cranberry area. If you'd like to learn more about our efforts, we welcome your interest and questions. Thank you for your understanding, and we look forward to seeing you at the bog in 2010!

Mid-September of each year hundreds of thousands of tourists invade Munich to celebrate life at the Bavarian Oktoberfest by consuming seven million liters (!) of beer accompanied by assorted 'sides' of rib-sticking food. Those who can not travel to Munich celebrate in their home states with local brews and food. This year, when more than the usual local restaurants advertised Oktoberfest specials, I began eating my way through their "German" dishes. With great disappointment I found that amongst the sparse selections offered, most could be identified as German only by name. Some were nothing more than commercial knackwurst or Frankfurters grilled with onions or a breaded veal scaloppini off the regular menu masquerading as "Wiener Schnitzel". A Maalox or two became my usual dessert after these tasting jaunts. Home baked refreshments and cider were served on the outside patio midst falling leaves and autumn sunshine. Inside, Gayle read her story to the hushed crowd. She then closed the event with much happy book signing. It was a very good day for Gayle Byrne, the library, and the town of Killingworth. Please help give the kids of the Hartford Boys & Girls Club a chance to give holiday gifts to their families this year! Come out this Saturday, October 17 from 9:00-12:00 p.m. at the Killingworth Elementary School front parking lot to donate items for the 3rd Annual Hartford Boys & Girls Club Holiday Shopping Night.
Did you know that 41%* of Hartford children live below the federal poverty level? Many of these children don't have an opportunity to give presents to their families. At the Shopping Night, they can buy presents at very low prices (generally between $. 25 and $1.00) or use coupons they've earned at the Boys & Girls Club. By the end of the night, they have big smiles and bags full of wrapped presents they picked out especially for their families! We're looking for gifts for moms, dads, teens and kids: Toys, books and games in great condition that your kids have outgrown Kids clothes (babies on up) that are still in excellent shape Costume jewelry you no longer wear Gifts you've received that have a place of honor in your closet Gifts you've given to those "hard to shop for" men and TEENS - still with the tags on somewhere in their closets We're also collecting wrapping paper. And, if you can stop by with a cash donation...that would be great too! All donations are tax-deductible. For more information on the Boys & Girls Club of Hartford, please go to www.bgchartford.org. If you have donations and can't make the collection date or for more information on the Holiday Shopping Night, please call Carolyn Anderson at 663-3481. * 2006 U.S Census Bureau ![]() "Destination Book Fair" will offer specially priced books and educational products, including new releases, award-winning titles, children's classics, interactive software, adult books and current bestsellers from many publishers.
