Volunteer Tax Preparers Needed - No Accounting Experience Necessary

Here's a way to make a difference at tax time - volunteer to become a tax preparer and you can help working families get back the money they've earned. Free tax preparation services are available during the tax season through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA) to ensure that working families and individuals are filing for the tax credits they have earned. It can also help people save up to $150 in tax preparation fees.

The program is looking for volunteers at the local VITA sites to provide free basic tax preparation for eligible taxpayers from January 21 - April 10, 2010. Volunteers should be available to help 2-4 hours per week, during the evening or on Saturdays during this time period.

Volunteers must complete a training and will be certified by the IRS. The training will be held from January 4-14, 2010 in the evening. Volunteers are trained to let filers know if they qualify for additional tax credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit. Anyone with an income below $50,000 is eligible to make an appointment for this free service.

Volunteer qualifications are:
• Basic computer skills for inputting tax return information.
• Knowledge of the most elementary tax forms in helpful. Basic tax training and certification will be provided. No accounting experience necessary.
• Ability to deal with the public in a helpful and supportive manner. Interviewing skills training is provided.
• Friendly, dependable, and flexible.

Volunteer tasks include:
• Attend basic and/or refresher tax law training and certification on January 4-14, 2010. Instruction on the use of tax preparation and electronic filing software is included.
• Successfully pass a test on required tax law knowledge. Online practice sessions available as preparation.
• Interview clients to determine that all income, deductions, and allowable credits are claimed.
• Enter information in the computer software program. All the math calculations are done by the software.
• Maintain confidentiality of all client information.

Haddam Historical Society Invites You Home for the Holidays

To celebrate the holiday season the Haddam Historical Society and neighbors will host several special events on Saturday, December 5 showcasing local historic homes festively adorned and trimmed with period and traditional decorations. This is an opportunity to step back, slow down and savor the sights, sounds and smells of times past.

A Charming Christmas Cape will feature the beautifully restored 18th Century Cape known as the "Flatiron House" on Park Road across from the UConn Extension Center. The house will be open between 3 pm and 5pm with a suggested donation of $10. Parking available along Park Road.

Walkley Winter Windows will highlight historic homes neighboring the Thankful Arnold House Museum. Walk from home to home and "peek" through an exterior window to experience themed rooms decorated for the season. The walking tour will run between 5 pm and 7 pm.

Between 5 pm and 8 pm, the Town Hall will feature refreshments, including a decadent dessert bar, beverages, carol singing and children's activities, as well as the opportunity to shop for special local gifts and evergreen wreaths.

An Arnold Family Holiday will also open on December 5. The Thankful Arnold House Museum will be exhibit four rooms interpreted to reflect how different generations of the Arnold Family celebrated the season. Rooms will date from 1830, 1860, 1910 and 1950. Visitors can walk through each room and experience how the holidays evolved over 150 years. The museum will also be open for special tours on December 13, and December 27, 2009.

Admission for Winter Windows and Arnold House, including dessert bar and activities is $15 per person. Children under 12 are free. Tour 5 pm to 7 pm. Town Hall activities, 5 pm to 8 pm. Parking at the Town Hall and Town Office Building.

December 13 and December 27 admission for an Arnold Family Holiday is $10 per person. Children under 12 are free. (HHS supporters are free on these two days) 1 pm to 4 pm.

CAT Swimmers Collect Food For Needy
Swimmers from The Cougar Aquatic Team (CAT), an affiliate of the Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department, held a food drive on Sunday, November 15 at Robert's Food Market in North Madison, and, simultaneously, at Waldbaum's A&P Food Market in Middletown. Team members collected two full truckloads of food and donated it to the Haddam Food Bank and to Helping Hands in Killingworth. The team also was successful in collecting more than $100 in cash donations for the two organizations.

The CAT coaches, parents, and swimmers would like to thank the staff and customers at both grocery stores for helping them make this community outreach effort a great success.

The Cougar Aquatic Team is dedicated to providing a competitive swimming program that consistently produces student athletes that are a credit to society. More information about the team is available at www.catswim.com.

The Haddam-Killingworth has positions available for Evening / Weekend Facility Supervisors. Job duties include overseeing and supervising the Pool (and Fieldhouse facility as needed) during drop-in hours. Applicants must be at least 21 years old. Pay rate is between $10 - $15 per hour. Iino Presides Over First BOS Meeting
First Selectwoman Catherine Iino opened her first Board of Selectmen's meeting Monday evening. Among items on Iino's agenda were two Clean Energy initiatives, an update on Reservoir Road, the 2010 BOS meeting schedule and opening bids for the sale of a town-owned dump truck.

HK High School Named 'Cool School' by WFSB
WFSB's Morning News Anchor Mike Hydeck visited Haddam-Killingworth High School last week and proclaimed it a 'Cool School' for its student enthusiasm, volunteerism and outstanding programs. The school gathered for a rally in the gymnasium Friday morning with the Cougar Crazies, Cheerleaders and school mascot opening the morning news. Throughout the program WFSB highlighted HKHS's 911 class, environmental science class, Geo caching Club and International Culture Club. Click to watch the videos.
OBITUARY: Chary Demarest Nash
Chary Demarest Nash, 98, of Killingworth, wife of the late Harold Franklin Nash, passed away on November 22, 2009 at her home. Born November 13, 1911 in Bridgeport, she was the daughter of the late Richard G. Demarest and Mary Esther Smith Demarest. Mrs. Nash is a graduate of Northfield Seminary Class of 1930; she earned her Associate Degree in 1932 from University of Bridgeport and her BA Degree from Wellesley College in 1934. She was a founder and charter member of the American Association of University Women, Clinton branch and has been for over 50 years. She was a member of DAR, US Daughters of 1812, Daughters of the American Colonists, as well as other lineage societies. Mrs. Nash was a member of the Congregational Church in Killingworth, joining in 1949. She retired as Secretary of the Research Laboratory, at Cheseborough Ponds.

She is survived by her son H. Franklin Nash, Jr. (Carol Ann Nash) of Killingworth, two daughters Betsey Nash Stevens (Rev. Halsey Stevens) and Evelene Nash Rabou both of Killingworth, seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a son-in-law, Edward W. Rabou and grandson Edward F. Nash. A funeral service will be held on November 29, 2009 at 3 p.m. at the Congregational Church of Killingworth with burial in the memorial gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wednesday Eves of the Congregational Church in Killingworth 273 Rte. 81, Killingworth, CT 06419 or to the Wellesley College, Student's Aid Society, Scholarship Fund, 106 Central Street, Wellesley, MA 02481. New England Alpacas Holiday Open Farm Days
New England Alpacas in Killingworth plans to open its doors and offer special opportunities to visitors on Saturday, November 28 and Sunday, November 29 and Saturday, December 5. The open farm days are designed for families to broaden awareness of alpacas, fiber processing, and alpaca products.

In addition to opening the farm so visitors can meet the alpacas, New England Alpacas will also offer:
* free admission from 11 am to 4 pm
* fiber processing demonstrations
* discussions about how to raise and care for alpacas
* 100% handmade alpaca products for viewing or purchase
* free hot cocoa and baked goods
* free children's craft activities (weather permitting)
The Town of Killingworth's Transfer Station will be closed on Thursday, November 26, in observance of the Thanksgiving Holiday.

1st Annual H-K Alumni Basketball Game
Calling all basketball fans: former HKHS players will face off against each other in a charity event to benefit the Jason Lantieri Memorial Foundation and the HKHS basketball program in the 1st Alumni game on Sunday, Nov. 29 at 2 p.m. at HKHS.

The Jason Lantieri Memorial Foundation was created in loving memory of Jason Lantieri, a United States Army Sergeant, who tragically died in Iraq on October 10, 2007 while proudly serving his country. Jason was an HKHS graduate and a member of the basketball team during his years at HKHS.

The objective of the foundation is to give back to the communities where Jason touched the lives of so many. A $2000 scholarship is given yearly to a senior who exemplifies Jason's ideals and dedication. The Foundation has made donation's to the Wounded Warriors Foundation and has donated a new scoreboard to the baseball program at the high school. All profits from the event will directly benefit the Foundation.

Admission to the event is $2. There will be a concession stand available.

2009 Shoreline's Got Talent Auditions
Open auditions will be held Tuesday, November 24th for the 1st Shoreline's Got Talent Competition. This year's competition will benefit the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America. The 1st Place Prize is a $1000 Scholarship provided by Lenny and Joe's Fish Tale.

Whether talented in singing, dancing, playing an instrument, comedy, or anything else, every talented person is welcome. On December 23rd, the finalist that are chosen will compete on the HKTV Holiday Show where viewers will vote for who they believe is most talented. Each vote is one dollar donated to the cause.

Auditions are open to high school students who attend the following high schools: Westbrook, Morgan, Old Saybrook, Hale Ray, Daniel Hand, Guilford, Haddam Killingworth, Coginchaug, Lyme Old Lyme, Valley Regional, Middletown, Xavier and Mercy.
