Friends of Hammonasset Offers Evening Owl Prowl
The Friends of Hammonasset (FOH) introduces its annual "owl prowl" Jan. 8 at 6:30 p.m., with visitors encouraged to see, hear and learn about owls.

The evening will begin at the Meigs Point Nature Center at Hammonasset Beach State Park with a live owl presentation by Todd Secki and Christine Cummings Secki from "A Place Called Hope". The presentation will include a live Great Horned owl aka Chestnut, a Northern Saw Whet owl aka Sage, an Eastern Screech owl aka Dawn, and a Northern Saw Whet owl.

After the talk, several FOH volunteers will lead tours from the Nature Center out to Willard Island where people will have a chance to see owls. "This time of year," Todd Secki added, "there is a very good chance you will see or hear an owl in the wild as well."

Visitors will return to the nature center for cider after the walk. For further details, please call (203)214-2846 or (203)804-3453. "A Place Called Hope" located in Killingworth rescues injured wild birds - often hit by cars and trucks - and nurses them back to life.

This event is appropriate for ALL ages and families especially are welcome. No dogs, please for the walk at Willard Island. Meigs Point Nature Center is located within Hammonasset Beach State Park. The Park is south of Exit 62, I-95.
HK Sports: The HK Girls Basketball team fell in overtime to the Canton Warriors, 49-45, in the championship game of the Third Annual DeRita Construction Holiday Classic on Wednesday evening. The Cougars led most of the game, but needed a buzzer beating three pointer from senior captain Jordan Shultz to force overtime. The Warriors were perfect from the charity stripe in the extra frame and held on to take the title. Shultz finished with a game high 17 points followed by junior Emily Anderson who chipped in with 14 points and 10 rebounds, her third double-double of the season. Rounding out the Cougar scoring were junior Carley Mooney with 6 points and junior Lauren Muise and sophomore Shaina Rowley with 4 apiece. With the loss, HK evens its record at 3-3 and is off until Tuesday when it hosts Hyde at 7 pm at the fieldhouse.

In the JV championship game, HK overcame a first half scoring drought to defeat St. Bernards, 37-16, for the JV title. Sophomore Ashley Cook was named JV tournament MVP after pouring in 15 second half points on Wednesday. She was joined on the All Tournament Team by fellow sophomore Ashley Mooney. The Middletown Press recently honored HK's Patrick Gilhuly's 24-0 tennis season and Shoreline Title win as one of the Top Ten Local Sports Stories of 2009.

The boys tennis star had a memorable spring compiling 24 wins on the tennis court en route to a Shoreline Conference Championship and a perfect season.

Gilhuly defeated East Hampton's Evan Boyce in the SLC tournament title match at Old Lyme.

"I can't remember the last time a 1-2 singles player from our team, or for that matter, any other Shoreline Conference team swept both the regular and tournament season, said HK coach Rod Pakus. "The competition is just too good. This is something very special that Patrick has achieved and he has done it in a highly competitive league."

Come out and support the HKHS Boys Basketball team tonight as they take on the Morgan Huskies in Clinton at 7:00 p.m.

An open letter to the members of the Haddam Volunteer Fire Department and supporting Fire Companies:
By Bill Turner & Family

Late in the evening on Dec. 23rd, my wife smelled smoke in our upstairs bedroom. after looking around upstairs for the source, we discovered that a fire had broken out in an attic storage area behind our bedroom closets, and a very serious situation was quickly upon us. My wife placed an emergency 911 call as I raised the alarm to our four children to grab their coats, boots and anything important within reach. As we assembled outside - watching the smoke billow from our home - sirens were already heard with firefighting equipment arriving on scene very shortly thereafter. The situation was even more challenging since our long driveway was still icy and very slippery from the recent winter weather storms.

Upon their arrival, the professionalism of the firefighting team was immediately evident as equipment was quickly deployed and the firefighters took positions to fight the blaze now raging within our home. The freezing cold temperatures and lengthy run back to a water source was overcome by the brute force of a determined and well-trained team working selflessly to save a fellow community resident's home. The difficult conditions became even more challenging with the myriad collection of hoses and water runoff which was immediately freezing on the driveway's cold surfaces. Undaunted, the team fought on to successfully extinguish the fire.

While I will never be able to personally congratulate each member of the fire companies that fought courageously to save our family's home that night, the quick response and professional team effort stand as the primary reasons we will even have a home to go back to once fire damage repairs are completed. In our case, a much more severe property loss was avoided due to the rapid and effective actions of the Haddam Volunteer Fire Department and the other supporting fire companies from nearby towns. Words simply cannot fully express the appreciation and thanks we feel towards all the good people who answered the call that night.

The December holiday season is known to most faiths as one to spend time with family and celebrate the spiritual renewal symbolized with the passing of the winter solstice. Our recent experience, while tragic, also offers a meaningful blessing. My family and I now realize the extent of the unseen efforts that many good men and women regularly make to protect the lives and property of others living in their community. The willingness of the volunteer fire company members to choose to be away from their families to protect others in the community is a dedication that is admirable, noteworthy, and very humbling. To so quickly respond at the peak of the holiday season - taking fire company members from their families during the "prime-time" season of family togetherness - represents a sacrifice that clearly reflects a depth of 'human goodness' that sometimes seems very elusive in our modern society.

My family and I once again offer our heartfelt thanks and deep appreciation to all who responded for us in our time of need.

Sincerely,
Bill Turner & Family
Higganum, CT

Local Area in the Dark Due to High Winds
According to www.WFSB.com, reports of power outages skyrocketed to more than 26,000 this afternoon as strong winds blast through the state. According to CL&P 475 Killingworth and 1832 Clinton customers have been impacted.

Gov. Jodi Rell issued a statement after coordinating a state response to the massive power outages, overnight cold and wind chill temperatures.

Rell said, "We have seen steady winds of 20 - 30 miles per hour with gusts of more than 50 miles per hour. That has taken a toll on the power delivery infrastructure. Both Connecticut Light & Power and United Illuminating are working to get service restored as quickly as possible, but thousands of people have been without power at one point or another and some outages may last into the evening or beyond. Add to that the bitter cold and predicted wind chills tonight as low as 15 degrees below zero and there is a real danger."
Another Successful Telethon For HKHS
Haddam-Killingworth High School's annual December 23rd telethon had another successful year raising money for important causes. This year's event raised funds to benefit the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America. The student directed production is overseen by television production teacher Chuck Lewis, music teacher Marcy Webster, art teacher Betsy Himmelman and business education teacher Marcia Catalano.

This year's telethon included a new talent competition called, "Shoreline's Got Talent". The finalists, Brittany Wigglesworth, Julie Blum, Whale Tale, Lindsey Arthap, Tre Davis, Ian Thorpe and Holly DeMorro, Raina Mullen, Shoreline Singers, Camille Kostek and Gabby Leone performed during the live telethon and will perform again on Friday, January 8th for the final culmination in front of judges. The winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship provided by Lenny and Joe's Fish Tale Restaurants.

According to the Hartford Courant, the telethon raised more than $8,000 by 10:00 a.m. December 23rd. The program will be rebroadcast on Comcast Channel 18 through January 2. Admission to the January 8th concert is one canned food item to be donated to the Shoreline Food Pantry.
Lions Club Holiday Thanks

On behalf of the Killingworth Lions Club, I thank all the individuals who donated food, cash, and gift certificates during our collections at the compactor site in November and December. Special thanks to the man (name unknown) who gave $150 in Roberts Food Center gift cards in December. All items were turned over to Helping Hands of Killingworth. A great many families holidays were enriched by your gifts. As always, our projects succeed due to the generosity of the residents in our town.

As the end of the tax year approaches, Uncle Sam wants to make sure that you know about special tax breaks that went into effect this year in response to the recession. These provisions include

Special tax break for purchase of a new vehicle. You can deduct much of the state, local, sales, and excise taxes or other fees paid when buying a new car, light truck, motor home, or motorcycle between February 17, 2009, and December 31, 2009.
Temporary increase in Earned Income Tax Credit. Income limits and credit percentages for working families with three or more qualifying children have been increased;
Temporary increase in refundable portion of child tax credit. The minimum earned income amount used to calculate the additional child tax credit has been temporarily reduced.
Temporary suspension of tax on portion of unemployment benefits. For tax year 2009, taxpayers can exclude up to $2,400 of unemployment compensation.
American Opportunity Tax Credit. The Hope Credit has been renamed and expanded, for 2009 and 2010, to apply for tuition and certain fees for up to four years of college education.
Residential energy credits. A 30 percent break, up to $1,500, for qualifying improvements-such as insulation, energy efficient exterior windows, heating and cooling systems—placed into service in 2009 and 2010.
Making Work Pay. A tax credit of up to $400, or $800 on joint returns, which you have already seen in your paycheck if you are an employee. Some people will end up owing taxes because the tax credit doesn't apply, so the I.R.S. urges you to check your withholding by going to http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=96196,00.html.

Of course, this is just a very brief summary. Further information is available at www.IRS.gov or by calling 1-800-829-1040.

I wish you all a peaceful and prosperous year ahead.
