Sophomore guard Cloe Savino hits a three point shot.
HK Sports: The HK Girls Basketball team used balanced scoring, some timely three point shooting and a rebounding advantage over the much taller Warriors to take a, 46-33, victory away from Valley Regional on Friday evening. The Cougars got off to a sloppy start, turning the ball over on their first three possessions of the game. Sophomore guard Cloe Savino came into the contest and hit two key three pointers to give the Cougars a slight advantage going into the second period. More long range shooting from juniors Carley Mooney and Lauren Muise helped HK double up the Warriors, 28-14, at halftime. HK broke the game open in the third quarter and twelve different Cougars eventually saw action in what was a very physical game. HK was led by junior Emily Anderson with 15 points and 11 rebounds, sophomore Shaina Rowley with 9 points and 9 boards, Muise with 7 points and 6 rebounds, and senior Jordan Shultz with 7 rebounds to go along with 4 points. Other scorers were Savino with 6, Mooney with 3 and sophomore Kaylee Normandy with a pair. The Cougars who are now 5-3 (5-2 in Shoreline Conference play) are on the road again on Tuesday evening for a key Shoreline Conference matchup with Coginchaug at 7:30 pm in Durham. HK will try and avenge an earlier three point loss to the Devils.Write up and photo courtesy A & E Anderson

The HKHS Wrestling team fell to Derby, 42-33, Friday. Winners for the Cougars included: N. Fair, M. Revis, S. Regan, N. Adler, T. Jacobs and B. Backler.

Behind Kyle McCormick's 14 points and 3rd straight double figure scoring game, the Haddam-Killingworth Middle School Boys Basketball team easily defeated North Branford 66-32. The Cougars blitzed the T-Birds with a 22-9 run to start the game and never looked back. Speedster Ethan Kovach used his superior athleticism to disrupt the T-Bird offense, contributing 10 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals as the game’s "Stat-Sheet Stuffer." Seventh Grade Sensation Luke Ford continued an exclusive lineage of 7th graders to start Varsity, adding 10 points of his own to go along with a game high 9 rebounds. The Cougars had more rebounds (43) than North Branford had points (32), and had a season-high 23 assists on 31 field goals, led by Captain John Abbott's 7 assists. 11 different players scored including John Schuster and Tommy DiMauro with 7, Mike Milano and Peter Welch with 6, Nick Afragola with 4, and Logan O'Donnell and Matt Genoveisio adding 2. The Cougars improved to 3-0 on the season, as they head in to a huge test away at John Winthrop on Friday (1/8).

Together, we can fight the flu.

This Sunday marks the beginning of the annual observance of National Influenza Vaccination Week. This flu season has presented our community with a unique challenge to fight a new type of influenza -- the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus.

The H1N1 flu is a serious disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that between mid-April and November 14, 2009, 47 million people in the United States were infected with the 2009 H1N1 flu, more than 200,000 people were hospitalized, and over 9,800 people died.

Influenza is unpredictable and we do not know the likelihood of a future wave of H1N1 flu, but we do know that vaccination is the most important step in protecting against influenza. Protect yourself, your family and your community by getting vaccinated.

The following nearby towns are holding clinics during January. There are no longer any restrictions on age, residency, or health status. Be sure to call first to confirm vaccine availability and to see if there are any insurance requirements. A longer list of Connecticut H1N1 clinic hours and locations is available at
http://www.ct.gov/ctfluwatch/lib/ctfluwatch/h1n1/clinic_list.pdf.

Resident Pleads Guilty to Federal Tax Charge
Nora R. Dannehy, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that Killingworth resident David Thomas, 55, pleaded guilty today before United States District Judge Stefan R. Underhill in Bridgeport to one count of filing a false federal tax return.

According to court documents and statements made in court, Thomas, in his capacity as a licensed attorney, was retained by the Cedar Island Improvement Association to provide legal assistance relating to the installation of an underwater pipe connecting the Town of Clinton and Cedar Island. In 2004 and 2005, Thomas received approximately $120,977.22 from the Association. However, for the tax years 2004 and 2005, Thomas filed federal tax returns that failed to report the $120,977.22 he received, and that showed his adjusted gross income as zero.

Judge Underhill has scheduled sentencing for March 25, 2010, at which time Thomas faces a maximum term of imprisonment of three years and a fine of up to $100,000. Also, Thomas must pay approximately $44,000 in back taxes, plus penalties and interest.

'A Place Called Hope' Rescues Injured Chatfield Goose

Submitted by Christine Cummings-Secki
Todd Secki
A Place Called Hope

After suffering from an injury to its right wing, a lone Canada Goose who was residing in Chatfield Hollow State Park in Killingworth has finally been RESCUED!

This Canada Goose has been in the park since last Spring unable to fly. When the other geese flew off, he/she was left to fend for him/herself. Many calls from concerned park goers alerted us to the situation during the summer season. All callers stated that the wing drooped, appeared broken and the bird was unable to fly. By the time we became aware of this situation, the wing had already set or healed. There was not much we could do for the break at this point, not to mention that our attempts to rescue had all been unsuccessful.

We worried for the well being of this goose as we received many calls in regards to the goose being chased by dogs and or stalked by unattended children. We knew he was being fed breads and lunch snacks by good intending people but this only masks the hunger of a bird and does nothing for the daily nutritional requirements of wildlife. We felt an urgency to do something, but found ourselves at a standstill. We had no luck chasing a wild goose who could not only swim but run! And for any of you who think you can out run a goose, prove it! and please join us on our next rescue! Despite our concerns, we decided that it made the most sense to try again once Winter set in and the pond froze.

Read More »« Show Less

After many long months surviving on its own, enduring extreme winter temps, evading predators, dealing with a limited food supply, this goose had proved to have a successful routine. Regardless, it would only be a matter of time before his luck would run out. We knew it would be a horrible ending for a lone goose living on a frozen pond if we weren't able to intervene and soon. It was time for us to make our attempts at rescuing this goose again so we called on our volunteers to help us.

By the way, they don't call it a "wild goose chase" for nothing!. It took three hearty attempts by a group of our volunteers at A Place Called Hope but in the end, the Canada Goose has been rescued! He or she looks to be in fair health, a tad thin, but in overall good condition. The wing has healed beautifully and may only need to molt in new flight feathers before being able to join his/her flock in the sky! After an examination, our best guess is he/she will continue to be a wild goose after his/her next molt. The goose will live out the winter months in a safe location, along with other geese and a consistent water and food supply both natural and human assisted. We will always remember the Chatfield Hollow Goose as a brave survivor! and the one that "almost got away."

We, at A Place Called Hope would like to thank our devoted volunteers (Marilyn Lavezzoli, Tess Simhoni, and Miranda Voght) for joining us on this rescue mission. Each of you know how serious this situation was, and you all dedicated your time and your comfort, brrrrrr... to see this goose to safety. We couldn't do it without caring individuals like you!!! and we appreciate your participation! Spring will certainly bring us more of these kinds of events, so get ready!

We would also like to thank Russ Miller of Meigs Point Nature Center for adding success to our mission, and park goer Linda for her efforts both Monday and Tuesday. Two other park goers assisted on Monday, and unfortunately we do not know their names, but their efforts were not unnoticed. Thanks Fawn Haven Family for coming out to assist only moments after the rescue. Who knew we would have been successful so quickly today! THANK YOU ALL! for everything.

Volunteers Sworn In For Town Committees
First Selectwoman Cathy Iino invited several dozen residents who have stepped up to serve on town committees to attend a group swearing-in ceremony Tuesday night. She asked the volunteers to be mindful to follow all Freedom of Information Act regulations and Town filing deadlines and be creative in ways to help the town. She is looking at several measures that will help facilitate committee administration.
HK Sports: With a 53-30 win over Hyde on Tuesday evening at the fieldhouse, HK Girls Basketball coach Jim Bombaci earned his 450th career victory. Now in his fourth season with the Cougars, it was Bombaci's 50th victory at HK. Prior to leading the Cougars' squad, he coached at Daniel Hand in Madison and Hamden High School. Every healthy player on the HK roster got into Tuesday's contest with ten different players scoring led by Emily Anderson who netted 14 points. Other Cougars who got on the board were Anna Fetterol (8 points), Jordan Shultz (7 points), Ashley Cook (6 points), Lauren Muise and Shaina Rowley (4 points apiece), Ashley Mooney and Cloe Savino (each hit a three pointer), and Carley Mooney and Jen Venuti (2 points each). The team will take its 4-3 record on the road on Friday evening for a 7 pm Shoreline conference contest at Valley Regional.

Lauren McCann posts up against North Branford.
The HK Middle School Girls Basketball team opened up the new year defeating North Branford, 43-17, at North Branford on Tuesday. Both teams were off to a slow start in the first period with HK scoring only 6 points and North Branford 5. North Branford was extremely tough on the boards throughout the first half getting both offensive and defensive rebounds, closing out the half up by 1 with a score of 17-16. HK came out in the 3rd period ready to answer and went on a 13-0 run. In the 4th period, North Branford tried to rally but HK proved too strong outscoring them 14-10. Scoring for HK were Maya Savino with 23 points, Lauren McCann with 12 points, Kiley Anderson with 4 points, Ciara Samuel with 3 points and Casey Jackson with 1 point. HK's record improves to 2-1. HK plays John Winthrop on Friday at home at 4:00 p.m.

The JV was defeated by North Branford by a score of 20-4.
