Emily Anderson boxes out Hale Ray players under the basket.
HK Sports: The HK Girls Basketball team hosted Hale Ray in a pivotal Shoreline Conference matchup on Friday night at the fieldhouse and the Little Noises came away with a,50-49, victory. Poor shooting hurt the Cougars throughout the night but the team managed to keep the game close. Trailing by 3 points with 7 seconds left, Coach Bombaci called a timeout and drew up a play for a three point attempt by senior captain Jordan Shultz. With Hale Ray defenders draped on her arms, Shultz converted the basket but it was only a two pointer and no foul was called, thus giving Hale Ray the one point victory. The Cougars were paced by Shultz who poured in 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and sophomore Shaina Rowley who scored 14 to go along with 5 rebounds. Juniors Carley Mooney, Lauren Muise and Emily Anderson chipped in with 6, 5, and 4 respectively while Anderson collected 12 rebounds and blocked 4 shots, Muise had 8 rebounds and Mooney pulled down 5 boards. Coming off the bench, freshman Anna Fetteroll scored 2 points and had a rebound. With the loss the Cougars fall to 5-5 overall (5-4 in the conference) and the team travels to Uncasville on Saturday for a non-conference game with St. Bernards at 7 p.m.

In JV action, the Cougars used excellent full court pressure and teamwork to erase a 10 point halftime deficit to go on to defeat Hale Ray JV, 51-50. The JV team record is now 5-3.Write up and photo courtesy A & E Anderson

The Next Generation of Volunteer Fire Fighters
The next generation of Emergency Services Providers is on duty in Killingworth. Four Killingworth Junior Firefighters have completed training and have achieved State of Connecticut Certification as either Medical Response Technicians (MRT) or Emergency Medical Technicians,(EMT-B). Chad Golembeski, age 17, Kevin Gorman, and Steven Kindschi, 16, qualified as MRT's and Anthony Venuti, 16, has completed training as an EMT. A fifth member of the Killingworth Juniors, Tanner Kahre, age 17, will soon complete certification requirements as an EMT.

The State of Connecticut, Department of Public Health, Office of Emergency Medical Services, requires some 50 hours of training and successful completion of written and practical testing prior to granting MRT certification. EMT certification is earned by completing 130 hours of training, a 10 hour Clinical Internship and written and practical testing.

About ten young men and women participate in the Killingworth Junior Fire Company. They receive training in a variety of areas and activities. Our new MRT's and EMT's have also completed training and received certification in Forest Fire suppression.

The Killingworth Volunteer Fire Company responded to 187 calls for medical assistance in 2009. The services of these very competent young men will be fully utilized.

Max Downtown
185 Asylum St.
Hartford, CT

www.maxdowntown.com

Cuisine: ** Service: *** Ambiance: *** Price Range: $$$ Wine Menu: impressive, international, carefully selected specials
Hours: Lunch Mo-Fri 11.30am -2.30pm; Dinner Mo-Thu 5-10.30pm,
Fri-Sat 5-11.30pm, Sunday 4.30-9.30 pm

From arrival to departure, clued by the reservations, diners are addressed by name. "Alf and Alf" in British pubs refers to mixed stout and pale ale, at Max's it shows up in black-leather banquettes (stout) and tan-leather chairs (pale ale), a warm symmetry illuminated by artisan chandeliers with crimson shades. The permanent black-board above the look into-our-kitchen window honors Max's favorite purveyors by name and cubist art in vibrant Picasso-colors competes with soaring windows framing the street scenes of downtown. Snow flurries dancing under street lights heightened our indoor pleasures on a recent visit.

The fifteen page wine menu is best managed with the help of the sommelier, for sipping the featured quarter bottles can prove pricey, but there are good selections by the glass.

Choosing dinner is a challenge. Specials must be studied with devotion, as prize ingredients delivered by select purveyors are turned into gastronomic bliss. The performers in the limelight are seasonal, affecting frequent price and menu changes. Read more

Times are hard; if you or someone you know in Killingworth is in crisis, there are several ways to get help.

Diane Gladstone, Killingworth's Municipal Agent for the Elderly, can help you locate what you need to get you through. Although the town's resources are limited, Diane can refer you to state and private programs and help you navigate the system. And in spite of her title, Diane has helped Killingworth townspeople of all ages. You can reach her at Town Hall, 860 663-1765, extension 217, or by email at dgladstone@townofkillingworth.com. Please leave a message if you don't find her there.

Dial 211. We don't really dial anymore, but pushing 211 on your telephone will get you to a single source for information about community services, referrals to human services, and crisis intervention. Called Infoline, it is toll-free from anywhere in Connecticut and operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Multilingual call specialists and TDD access are available. Specialists help callers with issues ranging from substance abuse to financial problems. By the way, you can also dial 211 if you are looking to volunteer. (Remember that 911 remains the number to call for police, fire, or EMS emergency response.)

Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver a hot lunch during the week and frozen, microwavable meals for evenings and weekends. Run by the Estuary Council of Seniors, the Meals on Wheels program is very flexible and tailors services to individual needs-short or long term, daily or just a couple of days a week, one or two meals a day. A doctor's order is required, but the Estuary staff can obtain one directly from the physician. The ECS can usually start service the day following referral. The suggested donation for a meal is $2.50. A monthly donation request will be mailed to the recipient or a responsible party. No one will be denied a meal because of inability to contribute toward the meal.

ECS Cafê. If you can get out, the Estuary Council of Seniors runs several cafês around the region, serving lunch daily at noon. The closest one is at the United Church of Chester, 29 W. Main Street. You do need to sign up before 11:00 a.m. the day before by calling 860 688-1611. Other cafês are held in Clinton, Lyme, Old Saybrook, and Westbrook, and Old Saybrook serves breakfast and some dinners as well. The suggested donation for adults over age 60 is $2.50 per meal. For others, lunches are $6.25 ($2.50 for children under age 10).

Please don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it. That's what neighbors are for.

HK Sports: In the toughest test of the HKMS Boys' Basketball season to date, the host Chargers from John Winthrop proved that there undefeated record was no fluke. The Chargers jumped out to a quick 13-5 lead after one quarter and had the Cougars on their heels. However, in a shocking turn of events, the Cougars went on an amazing 22-4 run in the second quarter to overwhelm John Winthrop on their way to a convincing, 56-38, victory on Friday, January 8th in Deep River. The Cougars onslaught was created by their ferocious press defense and uncanny ability to switch defenses on the fly, frustrating the Chargers in to a multitude of turnovers and bad shots.

It also didn't hurt the Cougars that sharpshooting point guard John Abbott was lighting up the gym on an extremely cold afternoon. Abbott scored a career high 21 points including 5 three-point baskets. Aiding Abbott was the continued stellar play from "The Phenom" Luke Ford, who notched 13 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, proving to be no match for John Winthrop's bigs as he used his size and skill set to blow past defenders for easy scores. Rounding out the Cougar scoring were Ethan Kovach with his second consecutive 10 point game, and forwards Kyle McCormick and Kenneth Callahan adding 6 points a piece. With the win, the Cougars improve to 4-0 as they move on to face their next opponent, Hale-Ray, on Tuesday 1/12 at home. Come out and support this entertaining and exciting young squad as they look to stay perfect.
