![]() Cougars work to stop the Rams offense. ![]() Scoring for HK were Maya Savino with 13 points, Kiley Anderson with 5 points, Quinn Millard with 4 points, Lauren McCann with 3 points and Casey Jackson, Caroline Fortuna, Ciara Samuel and Maddy DeRita each chipped in with a pair. The HK JV team defeated Old Saybrook, 14-5. Scoring were: Halie Serbent and Teresa Tripodi with 4 points each, Julia Babbitt, Kayla Gesick and Meghan Sepega with 2 points each. Write up and photo courtesy D. Savino Last Tuesday, the HKMS Boys Basketball team traveled to Old Saybrook to take on the Rams. From the get-go, the Cougars jumped out a comfortable 14-2 lead following two deep threes by Captain John Abbott. But as recent trends and bad habits lead to lethargic play sometimes happen after big leads, the Rams valiantly fought back to cut it to a ten point lead for H-K going into the half, 26-16. After being challenged at halftime to pick up the defense and finish lay-ups on offense, H-K turned on the jets and pulled away for a rather uninspiring, 51-32 victory. The Cougars were led by Abbott's game-high 17 points, including four from beyond the arc. Luke Ford added 9 points, Ethan Kovach had 8, Kyle McCormick 6, Kenny Callahan 4, Pete Welch 3, and John Schuster and Nick Afragola added a pair each. With the victory, HKMS stayed unbeaten at 7-0, with an away affair at Old Lyme looming on Thursday 1/21. At the half-way mark, the Cougars are averaging 53.7 PPG while allowing only 34.7 PPG, defeating opponents by an astonishing 19 PPG. On Thursday, January 14th, the White Knights of Westbrook traveled to Killingworth to take on the Cougars. The Knights proved to be the toughest H-K opponent to date, weathering a early H-K lead and riding hot three point shooting to trail by only two at halftime 21-19. After an animated half-time discussion, the Cougars came out with a passion and fire that delighted the home crowd. HKMS outscored Westbrook 44-25, including a 35-12 run to end the game, on their way to another convincing 65-44 victory. The Cougars had four players in double figures, led by "The Phenom" Luke Ford's career-high 20 points and 7 rebounds. Kyle "K-Mac Attack" McCormick played one of the most well rounded games in 'the history of HKMS basketball,' scoring 15 points, dishing out 9 assists, grabbing 6 rebounds and collecting 6 steals, all while committing zero turnovers. John "J-Rabbit" Abbott added 11 points and 2 3s and Kenny "Mr. Smooth" Callahan continued to prove to be 'by far' the best 6th man in the league, contributing 11 points and hauling in a game-high 9 rebounds. Ethan "Pick Pocket" Kovach, John "J-Money" Schuster, and "Lil Nicky" Afragola added 4, 4, and 2 points respectively. H-K improves to 6-0 with this win. For tickets call (860) 663-5593 or purchase online at www.artscenterkillingworth.org Tuesday, January 19, 2010The Killingworth Volunteer Fire Company urges you to use all possibly precautions when handling and disposing of any type of ashes. Improper ash disposal is a cause of fires inside and outside the home. Ashes act as insulation for live embers in the ash and these retain enough heat for several days which is sufficient to ignite other combustible materials in contact with the ash. Improper ash disposal destroys homes, outbuildings and valuable natural resources. Always be careful when disposing of wood or coal ashes.
What can you do to prevent fires from igniting from hot wood ash? ------ Dispose of ashes in a metal container that can be tightly closed, douse with water, place the closed container outside your home away from combustible materials and leave in the container for several days before disposing of them. Many people invite disaster by disposing of their wood stove or fireplace ashes in garbage containers that are plastic or even in paper bags. It doesn't take much heat and only a small live ember for these types of containers to burst into flames. ------ Never store ashes inside your home or adjacent to the exterior in any container. ------ Teach other family members about the dangers associated with hot ash disposal. ------ Do Not place hot ashes in a container where there are any other combustible materials ------ Do Not dispose of ashes in a paper, plastic or cardboard containers ------ Do Not assume the ashes are cold and pour them onto the ground (even into a hole) where leaves can blow onto them or the wind can stir up sparks. A cord of wood produces about 50 pounds of ashes. Once you are POSITIVE your container of ashes is "Cold", place in a pile away from your home and even then away from other combustibles and prepare your container for the next load. ![]() Sunday, January 24, 2010 and Sunday, February 7, 2010 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Thankful Arnold House Museum, 14 Hayden Hill Road, Haddam, CT Enjoy a "historic" Sunday afternoon in the early 19th century kitchen of the Arnold House Museum to work on your unfinished knitting or needlework project.
