Lions' Annual Senior Dinner a Success
By Charlie Smith
What do 118 Killingworth seniors have in common with the Lions Outstanding Citizen of the Year? Seniors and COY both enjoy a well prepared meal.

Saturday evening, February 20, your local Lions Club hosted its 13th annual dinner thanking those who have made our community, state and country a better place to raise our children. We all have a lot to be thankful for but our senior citizens have sacrificed through two world wars making this a better place to live. Tom Callahan, the Connecticut Troubadour, lent his voice in patriotic tunes with many joining in. Penny McQueeney and her expert cooks and waiters served roast beef with all the trimmings.

Highlighting the night, President Terry Doyle presented to the sparkplug of
Parmelee Farm's Community Gardens, Peg Scofield a well deserved thank you for leading this project. Also, every day most of us find our local news by reading her on line newspaper Killingworth Today. She is our Lions Outstanding Citizen of the Year. First Selectwomen Cathy Iino read a Proclamation praising Peg's accomplishments and declaring Monday February 22, "Peg Scofield Day".

Editor's Note: I am flattered and honored to be recognized this year. My work with the gardens and Parmelee Farm is very rewarding and I enjoy every minute spent on that beautiful property. I encourage everyone to visit and take a peaceful walk back in time and experience what Killingworth was like when homesteads and farms dominated the countryside. Lastly, I could not have accomplished a fraction of what I've done without the help and support of so many. Thank you to all for joining together to bring this property back to life.

Killingworth Responds to Kleen Energy Disaster
By Marion McDougall
On afternoon of Friday, January 19, Joan Kuzminski and I volunteered, as members of our local Community Emergency Response Team, to work the check points at the Kleen Energy Plant. We relieved John Kempter, another member of our CERT, and were stationed by the main gate, checking IDs and recording arrivals. We also had a police officer stationed with us. The people coming through were very patient with us, and many even thanked us for our role in helping. It was quite busy. Working with us was Rebecca Posner, from Niantic— but she had actually taken one of her CERT classes from Killingworth's Director of Emergency Management, Don McDougall.

After a couple of hours, Joan and I were moved up to the "hot zone," right next to the plant. We could not allow anyone to enter the zone without a police or firefighter escort. But again, everyone there was respectful and patient with us. It was very cold and windy, so trying to enter people's names on a sheet that was blowing all over the place was challenging. Eventually we were relieved by CERT members from as far away as Orange, West Haven, Bethany, and Niantic. There was a bond between all the volunteers, no matter which group they were from. There was no division of towns. We were all just volunteers trying to do our part to help out in a disaster.

We have one of the most active CERTs in the area, and we were very proud to have Valley Shore Emergency Management Association CERT represented at the site of this tragedy to show we care.

Killingworth Goes Green

The Connecticut Clean Energy Fund (CCEF) recently announced that the town of has joined the Connecticut Clean Energy Communities Program by committing to a goal of purchasing at least 20 percent of its electricity for municipal facilities from clean, renewable energy sources. The Killingworth Board of Selectmen approved a resolution declaring the town's commitment, enabling Killingworth to join more than 90 other Connecticut municipalities that have made a commitment to a cleaner environment and greater energy independence.

First Selectwoman Catherine Iino said, "People from all segments of the town are really enthusiastic about this initiative and are eager to move forward. We expect to make good use of CCEF's programs, which are so important for the long-term environmental and economic health of our state."

In December, Killingworth's Board of Selectmen established an Energy Task Force to help the town meet its goals under the Connecticut Clean Energy Communities Program by supporting clean energy, conservation, and energy efficiency. The task force will also examine other sustainable practices to incorporate into its operations and patterns of development for the town and its residents. At a preliminary meeting in late January, the task force discussed the need to promote clean energy through a combination of events and communications that will involve schools, community groups, and nearby towns that have already implemented effective initiatives.

A total of 63 Killingworth residents are now supporting clean energy, having signed up as CTCleanEnergyOptionsSM customers [November 2009 Connecticut Clean Energy Communities Program data]. The task force will seek to boost this number in the coming months.

"Our Task Force is committed to changing the way energy is consumed in Killingworth and leading our region by example to bring about measurable and meaningful change," commented Energy Task Force member Phil Stull.

Killingworth's commitment to 20 percent clean energy is one of the required steps to become a Connecticut Clean Energy Community. Additionally, the town must commit to the EPA Community Energy Challenge - which challenges cities and towns across the nation to reduce their energy usage by at least 10 percent - and make a municipal clean energy purchase. The town earns points for clean energy signups through the CTCleanEnergyOptions program and for the installation of clean energy systems, such as solar photovoltaic, solar thermal and geothermal, in the community. Once Killingworth has met all requirements, the town will qualify as a Connecticut Clean Energy Community and, based on its earned points, receive a clean energy system, such as solar PV, from CCEF. Residents can learn more about the program and follow the town's progress at www.ctcleanenergy.com/communities.

"Killingworth town leaders have taken an important first step in supporting clean energy. Town residents and businesses can now do their part to help Killingworth earn a 2-kilowatt solar array from CCEF for a municipal facility," said Bob Wall, director, energy market initiatives for CCEF. "By supporting both clean energy and energy conservation, the people of Killingworth are demonstrating that they have the power to make a difference."
