Saturday, March 13, 2010StoneBridge Craftsmen of Killingworth, received multiple awards from the Connecticut Flower & Garden Show for their display. The awards that they won were Best Landscape Design, Best Stonework, Best Statement of Intent, and also Best Use of Structure. Stonebridge competed in the event with other Connecticut landscape companies. The Connecticut Flower and Garden Show theme for this year was "The Spice of Life".
The display presented for the show consisted of 790 square feet and featured an Italian countryside home based in the heart of Italy. Stonebridge built a stucco house, stone archway, patio, and stone fountain reminiscent of the European countryside. Stonebridge's theme was based on good friends, family, and good food "the Ultimate Spice of Life". StoneBridge Craftsmen is a family run business and offers both landscape construction and home remodeling services. ![]() Photo courtesy D. Quinn Friday, March 12, 2010The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is proud to have one of our own Local Hotshot winners win at the State Contest level on March 6th in East Hampton. Lizzy Anderson, from Killingworth, was the winner of the Girls 13-15 year old division with 101 points!
After the local contest, our winners advanced to the County Level held in Groton on February 13th and competed against other local winners from surrounding towns. Winner of the County level compete in the State Contest on March 6th in East Hampton. HK Rec has had a couple of top finishers over the years: Alex Pollack was runner up in 2004 and Brett Zanardi was the 1998 Champion. This recreational program is designed to promote basketball enthusiasm as much as basketball skill, fun, physical fitness, friendship and good sportsmanship. Each player has three one-minute rounds to shoot from "hotspots" placed on one half of the court. The contest challenges a player's speed, shooting, dribbling, and rebounding ability. The Hotshot Contest is sponsored by the Connecticut Recreation and Parks Association (CRPA), Mr. Trophy, the East Hampton Parks and Recreation Department, and the Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department. Thursday, March 11, 2010![]() Monthly Column: March, 2010 The nonpartisan Connecticut Office of Legislative Research recently disclosed that out of the 23 most recent rate increase applications by our health insurance companies, 19 were approved exactly as submitted. The rate increases, on an annual basis, averaged about 15%, and increases at such a rate have been granted by the Connecticut Insurance Department each of the last five years. The dramatic multiplier effect of the Insurance Department's approvals is obvious. The travesty of this premium increase pattern comes from the fact that our health insurance companies are reporting extraordinary profits. For example, last year Connecticut's four largest health insurance companies reported combined profits of $12.2 billion, up an astonishing 56% from the year before. These large profits were achieved not only by the premium rate increases granted by our Insurance Department but also by the sad fact that the insurance companies covered fewer patients than in previous years. Read More »« Show Less I am supporting two proposals to combat this problem. First, I am sponsoring a bill which will allow our Attorney General and our Healthcare Advocate to intervene in all premium increase proceedings before the Insurance Department. Currently, those proceedings are closed and clearly not in the public interest. Secondly, Connecticut's Insurance Commissioners, who are appointed by the Governor, have traditionally come from the insurance companies, and their actions have reflected little independence and a pro-industry bias. Thus, I am proposing that the Connecticut Insurance Commissioner be elected by the people. A little more democracy will help! ![]() A red-tailed hawk soars through the sky at Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison, Connecticut.
