Junior goalie Teagan Ferguson makes one of her six saves as Senior defender Elizabeth Craffey looks on.
HK Sports: Playing at home for the second consecutive day, the HK Lacrosse team hosted Bacon Academy on Friday and the Cougars notched their third consecutive victory, 14-4, over the Bobcats. HK Sports: HK Boys Tennis Defeats Portland 5-2
H-K Boys Tennis recorded its third straight win by taking four of the five singles matches and splitting doubles play in a Shoreline Conference match played in Portland this afternoon. "Portland is an up and coming team, said HK Coach Pakus, they showed us a lot of determination and focus out there. They are well coached and they will surprise someone this season."

In #1 singles, HK's Patrick Gilhuly won (6-4, 6-3) while the Cougars Co-Captain, Varun Ravishankar won(6-1, 7-6 TB7-1)at #2 singles. "For a guy that had his wisdom teeth removed a few days ago, Varun did very well. I believe he tired in the second set, said Coach Pakus, but he found a reserve of strength to finish off that tiebreak." Grant Armstrong won at 3 singles (2-6, 6-1,6-1). The win at #4 singles went to the Cougars' Senior Kyle Kelsey (6-1, 6-3). Portland's Justin Davielaisz prevented an HK singles sweep by beating HK Senior Tyler Montesi in straight sets (6-4, 6-3).

The teams split doubles play with HK's Gabe Kumnick and Jon Lehane defeating Frualy Fazzlio and Richard Le (6-3, 6-3) in #1 doubles action while Portland returned the favor and took the match at #2 doubles with Corey Nesci and Kenn Paley beating HK's Clayton Rountree and Paul Boccia in a hard fought three setter (6-3, 6-7 TB 2-7, 6-3). "We got out to a 3-1 lead in that third set but Portland's team dug down and closed us out by running off five straight games, said Pakus. That effort deserves the win."

The HK Baseball team remained undefeated on the young season with a, 7-5, victory over conference rival Cromwell on Wednesday.

HK fell behind early as Cromwell jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning of play. The Cougars used a four-run fourth to jump ahead 4-2 and held on the rest of the way for the victory.

Rob Flynn got the win on the mound, lasting 4 1/3 innings before giving way to Colin Sledzik, who earned a save by holding Cromwell at bay the remainder of the game. Flynn would also lead the Cougars offensively by going 2-3 with four RBI on the game. Carson Mislick ( 2-4, 2 runs, RBI) and Chris Milardo ( 2-3, run, RBI, SB) also has nice days at the plate. HK is now 3-0 (2-0 SLC) and will host North Branford on Friday at 3:45, weather permitting.

HK Players Present Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Show Dates: Friday, April 30th and Saturday, May 1st at 7:00pm
All Tickets $10. General Admission - doors open at 6:30pm

The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable in which Joseph endures a series of adventures where his spirit and humanity are continually challenged.

In this retelling of the Biblical story, Joseph is a handsome young man who is his father's favorite child, able to interpret dreams, and the bearer of an amazing coat. These facts lead Joseph's eleven brothers to become insatiably jealous. Thus, they sell Joseph into slavery to some passing Ishmaelites. After refusing the advances of his owner's wife, Joseph is sent to jail. Once in jail, he quickly becomes popular due to his ability to interpret dreams. The Pharaoh soon hears of Joseph's ability and appoints him to the post of Number Two man in Egypt. Years later, Joseph's now starving brothers arrive in Egypt and ask Joseph, whom they don't recognize, for assistance. Joseph, in turn, gives his brothers a scare, but eventually grants them all they desire, reveals his identity, and reunites the family.

Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock 'n' roll, you won't want to miss this spectacular production! Appropriate for all ages. Save the date!!

Put Play in Your Day at the YMCA

As part of a nationwide effort to encourage kids to get moving, the Valley-Shore YMCA will host YMCA Healthy Kids Day, the nation's largest health day for kids and families. YMCA Healthy Kids Day is filled with fun, engaging and creative activities that foster healthy living, and is a part of the YMCA's larger efforts to help more kids and families become physically active. All activities are free and open to the public.

YMCA Healthy Kids Day at the Valley-Shore YMCA will provide resources to help educate grown-ups about making healthy choices for their families every day. There will be activities such as face painting, pony rides, moonwalk, obstacle course, give-a-ways, t-shirts, clowns and more.

"Keeping kids healthy is at the core of what the Valley-Shore YMCA stands for," said Paul Mohabir, CEO, Valley-Shore YMCA. "The word 'exercise' doesn't sound very enjoyable to many people, especially kids, but getting them to move more through play that requires physical activity is the key to building healthy habits that last a lifetime. On YMCA Healthy Kids Day, both kids and grown-ups will have the opportunity to get moving, to play and to have fun."

Experts recommend that kids engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity, including active play, each day. Studies show that kids who consistently engage in play are happier and healthier, and develop and enhance a variety of skills including motor skills, social skills, problem solving, and creativity. Kids who get 60 minutes of physical play also tend to have higher self-esteem and perform better academically.

To make more time for physical activity, the Valley-Shore YMCA offers simple ways to put more play in kids' day, and to get the family moving more, too!

1. Make physical activity a regular part of family playtime - the more active kids are the more likely they are to continue being physically active later in life.
2. Allow kids to have unstructured playtime. All play is not created equal - kids need different types of play, including indoor and outdoor, active and inactive.
3. Reintroduce your child to the basics of active play: play hopscotch or basketball, jump rope, or enjoy games such as Red Light, Green Light and Simon Says or tag.
4. Limit screen time and use of electronic media to allow more time for play.

"The goal of encouraging kids to play more is to build a lifetime of love for physical activity," said Mohabir "Play should not seem like a chore - it is an activity that is fun and brings joy, and allows a kid to just be a kid."

YMCA Healthy Kids Day is supported by Essex Savings Bank. In addition, the Valley-Shore YMCA is proud to host representatives from the Westbrook Fire and Ambulance Department, who will be opening their fire truck and ambulance's for the kids to see. Lunch will be provided by Lenny & Joe's Fishtale. YMCA Healthy Kids Day is also supported nationally by Northwestern Mutual Foundation and Tropicana.

Captain Kellie Moskey makes the tag on SMSA player Jenny Groman on steal attempt
HK Sports: The HKHS Softball team got it's second win in a row when they faced SMSA at home yesterday. Solid pitching and great defense helped HK cruise to a, 15-0, victory over SMSA. Alli McFee pitched 3 no-hit innings. Ashley Cook, Kirsten Carlson and McFee combined for the one hit win. Sammy Waskowitz had a double and a triple and Taylor Burger had 2 hits, one of them a double. Coach Talbott utilized his entire roster of players in the five inning game. HK is 2-0 on the season and takes on Cromwell on Wednesday at 3:45 in Cromwell. Come see this talented team and cheer them on. Notes and photo courtesy J. McFee

After a long layoff due to a rainout, the HK Baseball team showed no signs of rust en route to a dominating, 11-0, victory over the Sports Medicine and Science Academy (SMSA).

The tone was set early by Cougar starting pitcher Colin Sledzik as he whiffed the first five batters he faced. He worked six innings with surgical precision, allowing only 2 hits while striking out 12. Sophomore Wes Nuhn pitched his first varsity inning, a 1-2-3 seventh to preserve the shutout.

Meanwhile, the HK offense was pounding out 10 hits, while crossing the plate 11 times (10 earned). The big blow for the Cougars was an impressive eight-run fifth that saw a bases loaded triple by Andrew Brough be the key hit. Brough (2-3, 3runs, 3 RBI), Dan Milardo (3-4, 3runs, 2SB) and Sledzik (2-3, 4 RBI) led the way for HK at the plate.

The Cougars are now 2-0 on the season and will look to stay undefeated as they travel to Cromwell on Wednesday for a 3:45 contest. Notes courtesy G. Annino
