Going Green at the Transfer Station

Starting on Today, May 1, you can bring plastics numbered 3 to 7, as well as numbers 1 and 2, to the recycling bins at the Transfer Station. The numbers appear inside the recycling triangle on the bottom of the containers. (Click here to view CRRA plastics recycling chart) Remember to rinse out your containers, and remember, the more we recycle, the lower the tipping fees the town pays. That's money that stays in taxpayers' pockets.

The town will also be issuing new, green Transfer Station stickers. Red stickers will be honored until June 15, so you don't need to rush to replace your current ones. New ones will be available at Town Hall and at the Transfer Station; remember to bring the registration for the vehicles to be stickered. Each household is entitled to two stickers.

Thank you all for helping to keep Killingworth clean, green, and in the black.

HK attacker Nicole Armenia follows through on the game winning goal in overtime against Old Lyme.
HK Sports: Playing on the road for the second time in three days, the HKHS Lacrosse team traveled to Town Woods Park in Old Lyme to take on the reigning Shoreline Conference Champions on their home field. Coming into the game, the Wildcats had never been defeated on their home field in conference play ever. With an amazing team effort, the Cougars made history and came away with a hard fought 11-10 overtime victory. Both teams traded goals early in the first half and with Old Lyme holding a 6-4 advantage, Coach Heather Ferrer called a key timeout to settle the team. The strategy worked as the Cougars scored the next four goals to take an 8-6 lead into halftime. The second half was more back and forth scoring with neither team able to pull away. With HK holding a slim 10-9 edge and one minute left in regulation, Old Lyme scored to tie the game and send it into the overtime period. Neither team could find the back of the net early in OT and with under a minute to go in the extra frame, Cougar goalie Teagan Ferguson cleared the ball upfield to Nicole Armenia who beat two Old Lyme defenders to net the gamewinner. HK was able to control the ensuing draw and run out the clock. Ferguson stopped 8 Wildcat attempts, many from free position shots by Old Lyme's top scorers. In addition to Armenia, 7 other Cougars participated in the scoring effort led by Emily Anderson with 4 goals, Leah DiGregorio with 2 goals and Camille Kostek with 1 goal and 1 assist. Ally Gillespie, Amanda Johannes, and Michelle Wendt each scored once and Mikayla Litevich dished out an assist. Em Alaconis, Liz Craffey, Fran Mastria and Sarah Muise all had huge contributions on the defensive end of the field. HK is now 6-1 (3-1 in conference) and will next host Old Saybrook on Tuesday, May 4th at 4 p.m.Photo and Article & courtesy A & E Anderson

Behind the first varsity win for Wes Nuhn, the HK Baseball team was able to earn a well played 2-1 victory over SLC for Westbrook on Friday. The game marked the third contest in three days for the Cougars, and the pitching passed with flying colors.

HK would stake Nuhn to an early lead when they tacked on a run to a 1-0 lead. Colin Sledzik would lead off the fourth with a double to the gap, which was immediately followed by Nate Silas sacrificing him to third. Carson Mislick would make the lead 2-0 after he hit a sacrifice fly to drive Sledzik in. Nuhn meanwhile, was carving his way through the Westbrook line-up to the tune of eight strikeouts in five plus innings. He only allowed four hits and walked four batters in that time. He ran out of gas in the sixth up 2-1. With a runner on third and no one out, Kyle Krajewski came on in relief and rudely slammed the door on the scoring chance by striking out the next two batters and inducing a pop out to first. HK improves to 9-1 (8-1 SLC) and will now wait until Monday to host Portland at 3:45.

HK Girls Tennis earned its second win of the season with a 5-2 victory at home over Coginchaug Friday afternoon. The Cougars are now 2-6. Junior Co-Captain Kelsey Hawkins had an easy 6-2 6-1 win over Jamie Garuti at number one singles. Sophomore Anna Shultz had a easy 6-0 6-2 victory over Maura Fehon at #4 singles. The #3 doubles team of senior Gen Dedushaj and junior Meg Wright won in straight sets 6-2 6-4 over Gwen Kotlarz and Chelsea Tuttle. The #1 and #2 doubles teams kept the afternoon interesting by splitting sets with their opponents and forcing a third set. #1 doubles team seniors Annie Bartosiak and Brittany Timothy prevailed 6-3 5-7 6-4 over Jen Roth and Sierra Querns . The #2 doubles team junior Michelle Roberge and sophomore Emma Soneson prevailed over Ashley Pen and Amanda Presutti 2-6 6-2 6-4

"We are starting to see some of our doubles teams gel," said coach Fiona Phelan. "As the season moves on they are playing better together and communicating better. They are also starting to recognize opportunities to win a point in different ways so hopefully going forward we can improve our record. I was really proud of the way everyone played today, even those players who didn't notch a win played really hard and well." HK travels to North Branford Monday.

HKHS Boys Tennis came away with a 5-2 victory in an away match at Coginchaug today. #1 Singles Patrick Gilhuly defeated Coginchaug's Nick D'Aquila (6-2, 6-1). Senior Co-captain Varun Ravishankar won the match at #2 singles by beating Mike Finley in straight sets (7-6 TB 7-3, 6-3). "Varun should be pumped after that win said H-K Coach Rod Pakus because Mike played #1 singles for Coginchaug at our last match. I told him that he is in good company in this league with that win!" The match at #3 singles was won by the Cougars' Andrew McCurdy over Mike Smith (6-4, 6-1) while Kyle Kelsey took the match from Coginchaug's Mark Flannery (6-2, 6-1). Due to availability of courts, Tyler Montesi of H-K took courts late at #5 singles and won the last match of the day from Tony Rondinone of Coginchaug, winning in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) to complete the singles sweep.

The Coginchaug duo defeated H-K's top doubles team Gabe Kumnick and Paul Boccia (6-4, 6-2). Coginchaug's #2 doubles team outlasted H-K's Clayton Rountree and Eric West winning in three sets (3-6, 6-3, 6-4). "We were up in the third set 2-love and those guys dug deeper than we did and came away with a good win for their program."

New Scoreboard Dedicated at High School
On Wednesday at the HKHS varsity baseball game, the Cougars gave thanks to the family and friends of Jason Lantieri for their generous funding of the new scoreboard in left field at the baseball field. Lantieri, of Killingworth, gave his life in the service of his country in 2007 when he was killed in Iraq. The scoreboard is in memory of the two year baseball letter winner. Jason's family and members of the Lantieri Memorial Foundation were presented a plaque of appreciation before the game by the entire baseball team and Head Coach Mark Brookes.

In a battle of the best Shoreline Conference records, the HK Baseball team came away with a 3-2 victory over visiting Old Lyem on Wednesday.

Hits were hard to come by as each team only had five, however the Cougars were able to use theirs to jump out to a 3-0 lead and hold on from there. Colin Sledzik had an RBI single in the first, with Dan Milardo knocking in another with an RBI single in the second. Milardo would have two hits, a run, and a stolen base on the afternoon.

Sledzik meanwhile, was busy carving through the Old Lyme hitters with his array of offerings from the mound. He pitched a complete game five hitter, four of which were infield hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out six. HK improves to 7-1 (6-1 SLC) and will be right back in action at home versus Hale Ray at 4:00 on Thursday.

After downing Hale-Ray, 6-4, Thursday, the HK Baseball team improves its 2010 record to 8-1 (7-1 SLC). The Cougars used a balanced offensive attack to pound out nine hits, including three doubles. HK took a 2-0 lead thanks to a Connor Bremer two-run single in the second, and never trailed the rest of the way. Rob Flynn, Carson Mislick, and Nate Silas would each chip in with two hit games to help the cause.

Flynn started on the mound for HK, going the distance and striking out six. He scattered seven hits and two walks on the afternoon. The Cougars will travel to Westbrook on Friday, to play their third game in three days. Game time is slated for 3:45.
To the Editor:
I recently had occasion to patronize the Cozy Corner Bake Shoppe in the shopping plaza on Route 81. I was favorably impressed with the quality of the baked goods, the reasonable prices and the cleanliness of the establishment. Tucked away in the corner of the plaza, I'm afraid that many townspeople might be unaware that they have such a fine bakery so close by. If you have a chance, I'd recommend that you give them a try.

The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable in which Joseph endures a series of adventures where his spirit and humanity are continually challenged.

In this retelling of the Biblical story, Joseph is a handsome young man who is his father's favorite child, able to interpret dreams, and the bearer of an amazing coat. These facts lead Joseph's eleven brothers to become insatiably jealous. Thus, they sell Joseph into slavery to some passing Ishmaelites. After refusing the advances of his owner's wife, Joseph is sent to jail. Once in jail, he quickly becomes popular due to his ability to interpret dreams. The Pharaoh soon hears of Joseph's ability and appoints him to the post of Number Two man in Egypt. Years later, Joseph's now starving brothers arrive in Egypt and ask Joseph, whom they don't recognize, for assistance. Joseph, in turn, gives his brothers a scare, but eventually grants them all they desire, reveals his identity, and reunites the family.

Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock 'n' roll, you won't want to miss this spectacular production! Appropriate for all ages.

HK Sports: The Old Lyme bats were as cold as the weather when HK Softball faced Old Lyme on home Wednesday afternoon. Ashley Cook was hot despite the weather holding the Old Lyme hitters to just 3 scattered hits and striking out 6. HK batters also started cold but got hot in the 3rd inning scoring all 4 of their runs on a combination of hits and errors by Old Lyme. Sammy Waskowitz got a triple in the 3rd and later scored on Taylor Burger's single. Mary Kate Murray hit Burger in on a fielder's choice and Kellie Moskey scored on Kaylee Normandy's single. Normandy got 2 hits on the day while the Old Lyme pitcher held HK to just 6 hits but that would be all they needed as they got their 4 straight win. HK dominated Cromwell on Tuesday afternoon cruising to a 13-0 victory at Cromwell. HK faces Westbrook on Friday afternoon at Westbrook trying to keep the winning streak alive. Photo and Notes by J. HK Boys Tennis lost to a visiting Old Lyme Team in a home match Wednesday leaving them with a .500 record for the season after eight matches. HK Senior Varun Ravishankar lost a difficult straight set match to Morgan White with both sets going to a tiebreak to decide with White coming out on top (7-6-TB 7-5, 7-6 - TB 7-4). Christiana Field ended the game with a tremendous catch deep in centerfield to deny a grand slam homerun to Old Saybrook catcher Trabucchi. Notes by S. Castlevetro

To the Editor:
I was very sad to see yesterday, that one of Killingworth's most revered elementary school teachers, Janet Scranton, had passed away on April 21st.

Both of my daughters, Jen and Sarah, had the great experience of having Mrs. Scranton when they were very young students at Killingworth Elementary School. They both have many fond memories of their days in her class, and the years that followed, as they became upperclassmen. She was a great example of a very dedicated and loving teacher, that everyone at the school respected and appreciated.

Thank you Janet (Mrs. Scranton), for being such a caring teacher, and getting my daughters' school career started in the right direction. Killingworth has lost a terrific teacher and citizen.

To Lou Scranton and the rest of the Scranton family, thank you for sharing such a wonderful person. We are sorry for your loss.

Sincerely,
Tim Gannon
HK Youth Lax Off to Strong Start
The Haddam Killingworth Youth Lacrosse Association (HKYLA) is off to a great start in their first season, with the Juniors getting the first ever HK youth lacrosse win by beating Stonington 4-3 on Sunday, April 18th. The team played great! The Senior team had a lot of opportunities on Saturday April 17th to beat East Lyme, down only 2-1 at half time, but in the end lost 7-1. Congratulations to Danny Thompson with first ever HKYLA assist and Patrick Fitzgibbons with the first ever HKYLA Seniors Goal! The Bantams played in Guilford on Tuesday, April 20th. Devin Civiello scored with assist from Kyle Cusick. Jared Sullivan took some great shots at the goal. Bantam goalies Hayden Steinhilper, Kevin Dougherty, and Teal Samson worked hard to defend the goal, but in the end, the Bantams were defeated by Guilford.

Thanks to all who came out on Saturday April 23rd to the HKYLA booth at the Haddam Junior Women's townwide tagsale. All money raised at the tag sale will go toward providing equipment for the new teams. For more information about HKYLA, go to their website: hkyouthlax.org

The renaissance fortress of Ibiza casts a spell of bold majesty from high above the blue Mediterranean. This islo-gem of the Baleares, where sparkling crystals of ancient salt flats create the world's most magnificent sunsets and where brilliant fireworks illuminate D'Alt Vila, are modifiers that can be transduced to describe Ibiza the restaurant in downtown New Haven. Their website-philosophy states: Ibiza is a very special Spanish restaurant, where the traditional and the modern fuse; I emphatically agree but must note that the philosophy and the chef's resume are presented with a humility that misleads by understating the creative passion and expertise of a sensational kitchen.Read more

To the Editor:
I must correct something that Mr. Stull said in his letter published yesterday. The Wettish project is not over budget; the Park and Recreation Committee has been attending extremely closely to expenditures and expects to complete it for no more than the $975 thousand that the town approved on June 18, 2009. More than half that amount, $500 thousand, has been paid for by a STEAP grant from the state, and the rest is being paid for out of town reserves--a decision that saves us money over the cost of bonding that amount.

I would just add that the reserve levels we have will allow us to bond future expenditures at favorable rate, should the need arise. The Board of Finance has been fiscally responsible in this regard.

Green Thumbs for Earth Day
Students at KES helped keep their corner of the world looking green during Beautification Day held on Thursday's Earth Day. Students and other volunteers raked, weeded, planted and mulched to keep the KES grounds looking beautiful. Mother Nature gave her blessing by providing sunny weather all day followed by a quick, hard-driving rain in the early evening to water all the new plantings and wash away any debris. Thanks to Carolyn Lindell for organizing the day's activities.

HK Sports: HK Girls Tennis lost 0-7 to Westbrook on Friday at home. Although the team lost, #4 singles and #1 doubles forced a third set and the #1 doubles team of Anna Shultz and Michelle Roberge forced a third set tiebreaker where they lost 11-9 in a very closely contested match. At #4 singles Senior Co-Captain won the first set 6;3, lost 4-6 in the second and third.

"Ashley really played hard today and used a lot of tactics that we discussed. She's a very tenacious player and will keep the point going as long as she can. She's to be commended for her determination and will," said Coach Fiona Phelan.

"I was shocked by the way our #1 doubles team played today. Westbrook has very strong players across the board and their number one doubles team is a seasoned team. I think Anna and Michelle - who had never played together before today - were a little shell-shocked after losing the first set 6-3. They got their act together with a little PMA as they told me - Positive Mental Attitude - and came back to win 6-4. They played a terrific third set and had their opportunities to win and really frustrated their opponents which played to our advantage," said Phelan. "It was great that it came down to such a close tiebreaker because either team deserved the win." HK plays Cromwell at home on Monday. HK is now 1-5. The match against Morgan on Thursday was rained out and will resume where play left off on May 4.

Defender Sarah Muise looks to move the ball upfield past Valley players.
The HK Lacrosse team improved to 5-0 with a convincing 15-4 home victory over previously undefeated Valley Regional. Goalie Teagan Ferguson needed only 6 saves on the afternoon as the Cougars controlled the ball on the offensive side of the field for most of the contest. Seven different HK players got into the scoring column led by Emily Anderson with 5 goals and 1 assist and Mikayla Litevich and Leah DiGregorio with 3 goals apiece. Giana DeNisi found the back of the net twice, Nicole Armenia had a goal and an assist, Amanda Johannes scored once and Camille Kostek dished out an assist. The Cougars JV squad played a close game against the Valley JV and HK prevailed 7-6. Next week the Cougars face two tough conference opponents on the road as they travel to North Branford on Tuesday and defending champion Old Lyme on Thursday. Opening draw for both games is 4 p.m. Note that Old Lyme hosts games at Town Woods Park and not at the Lyme/Old Lyme High School fields.

The HK Boys Tennis team lost both doubles and 2 of the five singles matches in an away Shoreline conference match at Westbrook today. HK's Patrick Gilhuly won at #1 singles in straight sets over James Landino (6-1, 6-2). "James played a good match and the results don't reflect how he played through an injury in that second set", said Coach Rod Pakus. The match at #2 Singles was won by Westbrook's Mike Arena over Grant Armstrong (6-1, 6-1) and Ryan Taylor beat HK's Andrew McCurdy (7-5, 6-2) at # 3 singles. HK's Senior Kyle Kelsey remained undefeated at #4 singles besting Alex Tragakes (6-0, 6-3). #5 singles was won by the Cougars Tyler Montesi. "Tyler was our shining star today, said Pakus, we knew that we had lost the match to Westbrook when he came off the courts having lost the first set. In spite of that he told me he would do the best he could and he overcame a 1-4 deficit in both the second and third sets to come away with that victory. He showed the true spirit of what HK tennis means with his (4-6, 7-5, 7-5) victory. That was a tough, close match for Mike Hathaway to lose but he's part of a team that really exposed our weaknesses." #1 Doubles Gabe Kumnick and Paul Boccia fell (6-0, 6-4) and Jon Lehane and Eric West fell in straight sets (6-4, 6-2).

Junior Lauren Muise makes a play on an East Hampton runner
HK Softball played an exciting game Friday afternoon at East Hampton and came away with the 5-4 come from behind much needed win. HK fell behind early 3-0 on several HK errors. HK battled back with 2 runs on a Shaina Rowley 2 RBI triple. East Hampton added an insurance run but HK did not quit. The 7th inning started with HK behind 4-2 but Kaylee Normandy singled and Alli McFee reached on a fielder's choice and Lauren Muise came up big with a clutch 2 out 2 run single to score the tying run when both Normandy and McFee scored. Jamie Corda was up with 2 outs and hit a hard grounder to third. The East Hampton third baseman tried to get the force at second but threw the ball into right field and the go ahead run came in when Muise scored. HK held East Hampton scoreless in the bottom half of the 7th to come away with the 5-4 victory. HK is now 3-2 in Shoreline Conference and 4-3 overall. They travels to Valley Saturday at 1 so come out and cheer on the girls. Shaina Rowley had 2 hits including the 2 RBI triple.

The HK Baseball team scratched out a 7-3 win on the road at East Hampton on Friday, in a SLC matchup. Trailing 3-2 entering the fourth inning, the Cougars finally woke up the offense and exploded for a five run inning. The big hit was a Matt Stojak bases loaded single that drove in two runs. Colin Sledzik and Nate Silas also had RBI hits. Chris Milardo led HK with three hits on the afternoon. Sledzik was also the starting pitcher for HK. He uncharacteristically struggled with his command early, but got things under control in the fourth to gut out the complete game victory. His performance gives HK a 6-1 (5-1 SLC) record going into Monday's 4:00 battle with Hale-Ray at home.

To the Editor,
Here we go again. Every year in Killingworth the Board of Finance decides to keep taxes higher than the need to be so that they can add to Killingworth "savings." Many Killingworth taxpayers are having tough times making ends meet, but this Board of Finance sees no problem in taking more money from them so that they can in the future buy some unspecified thing. They're not sure what that something might be, but you never know what might come up that looks good.

When the approximate $1 million Wettish project went more than $400,000 over budget, no problem, just hit the savings account. This type of government is not good. A modest surplus is fine, but in Killingworth our surplus is enormous, and can only lead to increased family stress and future unnecessary governmental expenditures.

It is a good family practice for extra monies to be put in savings, but Killingworth's Board of Finance should not treat the taxpayer's monies in this way.
