To the Editor: The selectman's office must sometimes seem like a flak catcher's job and the incoming flak is not always handled with grace. The flak throwers themselves can and do sometimes lack grace. Let's concede that mistakes have been made, and impatience exhibited. It's time for a truce. Let's walk in each other's shoes, and remember that we are neighbors in a small community. The town of Killingworth and its selectmen have a full plate. And the issue that is most divisive, at the moment, seems to be the inaptly named Lovers Lane. I believe there is a Board of Selectmen's meeting this Monday night. Voting on a compromise to the road opening/closing controversy could be a beautiful and timely thing. I don't know what a long term answer to the problem of Lovers Lane might be or whether the old compromise worked well enough to keep it in place over the foreseeable future. It seems reasonable that a decision to proceed under that policy remain in effect until a committee studies the situation thoroughly. After consideration of its findings, a relevant proposal could be presented at a town meeting. With a better understanding of the options, the town's electors could than vote on the proposal. It is my understanding that this is where the ultimate decision rests. Governance and leadership are very difficult today and without mutual respect between elected officials and electors, they are close to impossible. Dialogue and compromise are necessary to get things done, and yes, we did learn that in kindergarten. There are a variety of issues to tackle if we are to provide a vibrant future for Killingworth. Many projects that were neglected for years have been set in motion by this administration. Getting stubbornly bogged down (in a bog no less) is counterproductive. We can rise to the occasion together, or not. The results around the world of “or nots” are on the news hourly, and they are also reflected in the things that America no longer gets done. Let's not go there. Kathleen Amoia |
