To the Editor:

I noticed several Joe Lieberman signs in our town hanging out with Republican ones. On reflection, I thought, well that’s as it should be. If he wins the senate seat, it will be with the help of Republicans. I guess Joe would say it's the bipartisan thing.

My problem with Mr. Lieberman is more fundamental. In my opinion, he did not use his influence and the knowledge supposedly gained from many years in Congress to help chart a wiser course after 9/11 and the five years since. That is not an insignificant misstep or bipartisan indulgence. The Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld Iraq policy was a colossal error in judgment or worse, executed with acute incompetence. It has cost tens of thousands of lives, hundreds of billions of dollars, American credibility around the world, and possibly our future economic health. There is a self righteousness about Mr. Lieberman in all of this that seems to fit comfortably with the self righteous fundamentalism of Mr. Bush.

I am supporting the election of Ned Lamont, the Democratic primary winner, to the United States Senate.  I believe Ned is free of ideological hubris and that he will bring fresh energies and objectivity to the job.

Human nature is what it is, and what it requires of government is a system of checks and balances that tries to keep everyone honest and working for the public good. A one-sided affair with bipartisanship won't do that.
