To the Editor: In 2000 the state of Connecticut caught a glimpse of what we are now witnessing in a much larger scale from Joe Lieberman when he decided not to relinquish his Senate seat when he ran for Vice President. Disturbingly had he won the Vice Presidency Philip Giordano who was later convicted of being a child sexual predator would have likely been appointed by John Rowland to be Connecticut’s new Senator.During the 2004 Democratic presidential primary election Connecticut voters had to endure Joe Lieberman’s unapologetic rationalization of his vote to authorize force in Iraq. Many believe that Lieberman’s nightly diatribes in regard to this issue and his inability to admit that he was wrong forced the other candidates to the center right and contributed to Carl Rove being able to accuse the Democratic Candidates of flip flopping on this issue, thus hastening a Democratic loss. Now Joe Lieberman is supporting the beginnings of 'Swift Boat' type ads from a Republican strategist sponsored veterans group. In 2006 he is once again bent on selfishly damaging Democratic chances of wining back the House the Senate and the Governors office this Fall. By accepting Carl Rove like Republican political advertisements and Republican Money and by stubbornly refusing to accept the mandate delivered to him by the Democratic Party in Connecticut and by insisting upon running as an independent candidate Joe Lieberman is running the risk of detracting from Joe Courtney’s pursuit to unseat Rob Simmons in the Second District and State Senator Chris Murphy’s attempt to oust Nancy Johnson in the Fifth Congressional District. He also detracts from John Distefano's attempts to finally bring universal health care and property tax relief to Connecticut residents. Joe Lieberman’s swollen ego has been unable to grasp the fact that over sixty percent of Americans and even more of his constituency, now believe that waging war in Iraq was wrong. Joe seems to have been able to publicly justify the Bush Administrations propaganda while at the same time minimizing the toll this war has taken in human life and in US treasure. Joe Lieberman’s desperate, selfish, pathetic necessity to retain
power for himself at any cost has hurt the Democratic Party in the
past and will unfortunately inflict is most serious damage this year. |
