There has been a civics lesson right here in Killingworth. Politics at every level is increasingly controlled by relatively small segments of the population with specific agendas that increasingly deprive the citizens of real choice. In the age of instant communication and 24/7 politics, is it any wonder the majority of Americans are ever more silent until it is too late? Fortunately, here in Connecticut, the barriers have been minimized to make it easier for third party candidates to be on the ballot affording the voters real choice.
Marty Klein and I have formed the Killingworth Progressives in order to keep the progress of the last two years moving forward at an accelerated pace. I believe this is good for Killingworth. It may be bad for others who would like to run on Marty’s record. Marty is pleased to run on his record of action, achievement and plans for the future.
Marty took office in 2005 with a very significant learning curve ahead of him. As KRTC Chairman, I asked key Republicans to provide whatever support we could. To his credit Marty sought our advice and I am proud to say that we gave it. That does not mean he did not have some missteps at the beginning, but he has become the most operationally experienced and engaged First Selectman in recent history. By reaching out into the community, he has revitalized entities like the Housing Partnership, started new initiatives such the Killingworth Foundation and completed numerous public works projects.
In my opinion, partisanship has no place in local government. When Marty approached me about running with him, he said he wanted someone with whom he could work closely and who would make a significant contribution to move Killingworth forward in a positive way. I know I can be that Selectman. I pledge to be engaged well beyond the two meetings a month, to be fully prepared on the issues for those meetings, and to vote in a thoughtful and pragmatic manner looking only to the long term best interests of Killingworth.
Marty and I want to invite all residents of Killingworth to join us
in our campaign to Keep up the progress!
John Amport
Candidate for Selectman
