To the Editor:

This is an open letter to all residents of Killingworth who own dogs. Having been a former owner of several dogs in my lifetime, I believe I can speak fairly to the issue of encountering dogs while out walking. I frequently use the roads in our town for my daily exercise. It is a always pleasant to encounter fellow fitness conscious people. Most times we, the people exercising, are not concerned with outside distractions unless a car passes (a whole other story and letter).

My beef is with the owners who let their dogs loose in the yard, assuming their pet will not stray. (Having owned a dog that would frequently stray, I know the frustration of having to locate her and keep her nearby when outside). Today is a perfect example of my complaint. I was walking mid -morning on one of the more frequently traveled roads between Rtes. 80 and 79. While out walking, a dog left the yard and positioned itself in the middle of the road. I spoke to it in a pleasant voice, he began to growl. Now, the owner was in the yard and called to the dog, He did not move but kept me in his sight. The owner then proceeded to tell me that the dog was a big baby and would not harm me. It was not obvious to me as I was facing the "business" end of the dog. With repeated calls to the dog, he still proceeded to follow me and I felt quite threatened.

So, I guess what I am proposing is that when a dog owner is outside with their pet, please, do not assume your animal is harmless. Keep the dog with you at all times.

Those of us who use the roads for exercising have the right to not be placed in harm's way. We enjoy walking, running and biking without the fear of a beloved pet harassing us.

Sincerely,
Deb Bruen
