To the Editor:

I have no desire to turn a point of order into a debate. Yet I feel I must respond to Mr. Amport's comments on my recent letter concerning the absence of our First Selectman from Sergeant Lantieri's funeral.

The point of protocol I spoke to was not an opinion and needs no correction. The many elected officials and local officeholders who did attend may have done so for personal reasons but also were there because they hold the titles of their respective offices, with all the attendant duties and responsibilities those offices carry. Governor Rell was there because of the office she holds, not because of politics or affiliation.

It is not in Mr. Klein's purview as First Selectman to decide arbitrarily to redefine the protocol governing the office he holds. As a veteran and one who has sought the office of First Selectman, Mr. Amport should know that. I wonder, if he now occupied the seat held by Mr. Klein, would he have deemed it proper to attend Sgt. Lantieri's funeral?

As for the appropriateness of behavior in paying respect to sacrifice in service, I refer both Mr. Amport and Mr. Klein to what may be considered the final word on the matter of putting honor before politics: "The Gettysburg Address".

I again put forth the issue of a permanent tribute by Killingworth to Sgt. Lantieri's sacrifice. I implore everyone who agrees to contact the Board of Selectmen by phone, email or letter.

I will write no more on this matter.

Ray Celmer
