To the Editor:

As a Killingworth resident since 1968, I've seen a lot of changes on our roads. The roads are pretty much the same, but the growth in population has made for really crowded conditions on our local roads.  I'd like to heartily endorse Selectman Klein's plea to one and all to observe posted limits. The stories of inconsiderate drivers are legion, and the situation especially on Route 81 deserves very serious consideration. I saw that Mr. Klein continues to push for traffic lights at the dangerous curve by the new school complex on Route 81 despite the State's unbelievable statement that such a safety measure isn't necessary! And the traffic circle hosts a series of "almost accidents" literally every few minutes during busy traffic times. I've noticed that cars entering the circle from Route 81 either north or southbound, usually speed right into the circle regardless of what's there. And several times I've seen cars actually going the wrong way around the circle!!

Eventually something has to be done. A traffic light perhaps would be a great safety implementation. The design of the circle is faulty - has been for years - even the warning yield signs are so small as to be practically invisible - especially to a rapidly approaching driver. The circle is much smaller than the North Madison Circle, where one at least has more space to observe the "rules of the road".

And remembering that Route 81 is now a major route from the Hartford area to the Shoreline, especially with the huge Clinton shopping complexes down near Route 95, the mix of transients in a big hurry and local drivers makes for disaster just waiting to happen.

Will we need some traffic fatalities to implement some serious revisions? Mr. Klein seems to know that bureaucratic lethargy in our state government is worth fighting. Let's support his efforts.

Respectfully,
Yves Feder
