To the Editor:

In regard to the recent article the Killingworth Krier regarding Killingworth speeders, I must say that I am completely tired of the ridiculous speeds at which people drive on these country roads. Walking to my mailbox can be tricky. In the three years that I've lived on Roast Meat Hill Road, the speeding has substantially worsened. Had I known about this issue, I would never have purchased a home here. I walk my dog, but no longer my horse. It's treacherous. Cars, vans, trucks and motorcycles fly by at speeds of >60 mph. This is a through street for many large trucks going one town to another, which it should not be. It should be posted at both ends as not a through street. Also, many drivers are repeat offenders, and I have a rather long list of license plate numbers. I now call the police to report some instances, such as the red Jeep and the black BMW who go by women pushing baby strollers at at least 60 mph. They don't slow down. They don't move away from the walkers.

Our town government has added to the problem by painting bright yellow lines on country roads, which give drivers a good idea where they are on the road, thus making speeding even easier.

Unfortunately, the year old Traffic Safety Committee has been ineffective, virtually invisible. New signs?  The never-apparent smart machine which must live in some other town?  Ellis' "car count" in different areas of town?  Fluff.  Absolute ineffective fluff. Much more should have been accomplished in a year's time.

The bottom line is, we need more law enforcement in Killingworth. Nothing will force a speeder to think twice like an officer pulling him/her over and writing out a ticket with a fine. And maybe a second ticket. The bottom line is that one resident state trooper cannot do it all, even if he were Superman!

Let's have some leadership in town hall.  Mr. Klein, do we do what so often happens--wait to take action until-a child runs into the road and is killed or an elderly person gets killed on the way to a mailbox?

Town Hall needs to take action. November elections are coming.  SUPPORT THE CANDIDATE WITH SPEED CONTROL AND ADDITIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT IN THEIR PLATFORM AND THEN HOLD HIM/HER ACCOUNTABLE.

Sincerely,

Joan Hinchcliffe
Roast Meat Hill Road
