To the Editor:

Your articles over speed limits recently are very frightening.  Why is it that over the last 10 years, there are hardly any accidents in town?  Maybe because we are allowed to drive as road conditions permit.   Speed limits do not work.  They never have and they never will.  Go on the highway and you see that traffic flows at 80 not 65.  As cars get better, people will drive faster.  People in other countries do not have speed limits and they are safer and less stressed out driving.

In a town which has low crime, and 1 police officer, why do we waste the officer's time giving him the job of ticketing drivers who are not doing anything wrong but simply enjoying driving and getting from one place to another?   Shouldn't the officer which we pay $80,000, do something important like fight drugs in school, drugs in our town,  corruption by the constructions companies overcharging for work and spending months to fix a simple road?  How about having the police catch all the people trying to screw the taxpayer every day.

There is no speed problem in town.  People drive safely because no one wants to get into a accident.  No one wants to kill a lady walking on the street.  Giving tickets for speeding has not worked for 40 years.  Before the 70's we did not have speed limits on highways and we were all better off.  People were awake while driving.  In the sole western state which just recently enacted a speed limit, accidents went up by a large percentage.   Therefore we should get rid of all the speed limits in town and make the town a safer and friendlier town.

To the people who want to walk in the streets,  if the population is increasing faster and faster, you should realize that traffic from cars will also increase.  There is no public rail or bus service in Killingworth.  People drive.  Wave nicely to the people driving by and they will wave back and slow down automatically.  I do not know what kind of people have moved into town in the past 5 years but they need to go before we are stuck with a terrible town full of corruption like all the rest.

You recently wrote that the trooper gave 50 tickets in one month in front of the elementary school.  I saw him giving tickets on a Sunday afternoon.  There was no school in session there on a Sunday. Just the speed limit dropped for NO reason there and that gave him a change to write tickets to people going on a nice sunday drive.  We are all ruining the lives of fellow Americans. and we are all making America a restricted and terrible place to live for our neighbors.  Stop trying to control other peoples lives and be more friendly to your neighbors in town.

Ever driver is different, every car feels different, and every road is different.  You cannot force a car to go a certain speed just because you feel like it.  It is in fact federal law that speed limits must reflect the traffic flow without any speed limit.

We all end up paying more to insurance companies when we get a ticket.  We all get more stress driving when we look for police rather than look for animals and people and drive at a speed where we are awake and alert.
