To the Editor:
6 Months"OFF THE JOB"
Lovers' Lane is Closed, Lovers' Lane is opened. Is that what we are paying
our First Selectman $59,000 to tell us? What is the condition of other roads
in town?
What is the status of Reservoir River Bridge? How often has the BOS been
in contact with the permitting division of the DOT? If the selectmen are persistent,
the permits can be obtained within 6 months or less.
When are they going to begin the repairs on Burr Hill Road?
Are the traffic problems at the intersection of Green Hill Road and River
Road being addressed?
On which roads in town have the guide rails been repaired?
How long do we have to wait for the construction on the second phase
of Alder's Bridge Road?
Must we wait until there is an emergency, before replacing the decking
on the bridge crossing the Hammonassett on River Road? If the decking is not
replaced, we will have to build a new bridge. The shims underneath the bridge
have moved and the bolts can be removed by hand. If this bridge remains in
disrepair , it will be a matter of time before we have to shut it down. Are
we waiting for a comparable situation to Reservoir River Bridge?
Yes, the BOS is anxious to save money. But there is nothing cost effective
in neglecting maintenance to our infrastructure.
I nominated competent, conscientious people to serve on the Charter Review
Commission. I cannot see the rationale for the unnecessary delay, of
6 months, for the BOS to confirm these appointments.
Accordingly, we we will not be able to vote for a new Charter review
commission until 2010.
Other commissions, boards, and committees, in town, have only skeletal
representation. The BOS has been lax about recruiting members to fill vacancies
and enable these bodies to operate efficiently.
Has any thought been given to providing funding for replacing the compactor
when it becomes inoperable?
I will say, though, there is one thing that you can count on the "Do Nothing
Crowd " to do well. NOTHING!

Former First Selectman in Killingworth
