I have to concur with Phil Stull's recent letter regarding the Venuti property. I did respond the questionnaire that was sent out by P & Z and I thought the number one priority should be expanding our tax base. I moved here a little over 2 years ago from Branford. I served on its' Representative Town Meeting for 10 years. I saw first hand how citizens wanted the best of all worlds (spend money, don't raise taxes and don't grow your tax base). It does not work that way. Take your pick, spend the money OR don't raise taxes. Or, you can grow your tax base and have some balance.
Although I am not one for big development, I do favor balanced growth. In the short time I have lived here, I have a strong sense that there is a definite imbalance. I think this proposal will really tip the scales to the wrong side for our small Town.
I don't think this proposed purchase is best suited for Killingworth. Has anyone considered the annual cost of maintenance, upkeep, liability, (future improvements to) and all other long term expenses related to this purchase?
I think the current economic climate is going to be with us for a while. I for one am looking to cut my spending until we get through this downturn in the economy. If it comes before me, I will vote no.
Or ....... maybe the Town should consider purchasing the property, retain enough land for a Town beach, park and walking trails and then sell the balance to an experienced developer for an active adult community. Perhaps we could have the best of all worlds.
