To the Editor:

I am writing in regards to the decision by Regional School District 17 to allow students to opt out of hearing the President speak in school today.  I cannot express how deeply disturbing this decision was.

What is next allowing children of parents who only believe in creationism to opt out of classes where evolution is discussed?  How about the New Deal revisionists who refuse to accept that Keynesian economics helped to end the great depression? Should their children be allowed to skip that lesson? Maybe the children of white supremacists and neo Nazis should be allowed to let their children skip history class when the holocaust is being taught or when slavery or segregation is discussed?

How long do we as a society tolerate these right wing 'birthers' and 'death panel' disinformationists before we discredit their nonsense once and for all?  I pity any child who was kept home today because of Obama's speech.  They are in for a long hard road through life.  In the end it is not Obama that these parents fear. What they really fear it is that their kids may find out how truly ignorant their parents actually are.
