Dear Editor: Reflecting on Mr. Auer's efforts to date, it occurs to me there is a great deal to consider. Imagine one person taking the time to meet with the various regulating bodies that control our community's resources, coordinating efforts to acquire the necessary level of approval and funding to start a project that will be done without profit. How many people do you know who would be willing to spend a Saturday morning in a spirited meeting with neighbors who oppose the creation of a playing field in proximity to their homes? Sadly, I must admit that I don't know many people of who have reached this level of community activism. I'm proud to belong to a community with people like Mr. Auer. It reminds me of the small-town spirit that many would say existed only in days gone by. Perhaps most important, it inspires me to act likewise. So what is there to learn from Mr. Auer's actions? I suggest we fan the spark started by Mr. Auer into a flame...by letting our community's elected leaders know we fully endorse this effort. Let's show up at town meetings to voice our support, sending the message that we're with Mr. Auer. Mr. Auer's actions represent a grassroots solution to a community problem - a solution with minimal burden to the taxpayers. These days there's always a solution to community need, but all too frequently the price tag is staggering. Maybe each of us should consider what we might contribute to similar grassroots initiatives. Imagine the unique distinction of restoring the small town pride that rarely exists these days. Perhaps in November as we elect new town leaders we should seek leaders who nurture the efforts of people like Eric Auer. So regardless of whether the first spade of dirt is moved on these fields, I admire Mr. Auers heroic efforts in restoring community pride. Thank you for the inspiration, Eric! Robert D. H. Aft
