To the Editor:

On behalf of the Killingworth Field Study Committee, charged with identifying promising locations for new recreation fields, I would like to go on record as strongly supporting the purchase of the Wettish property. A Town Meeting regarding this property is scheduled for February 7th. We urge all residents who are concerned about active and passive recreation in Killingworth to attend and express their support.

Since last April, when we recommended that the Board of Selectmen look into this outstanding opportunity, it has become increasingly clear that this particular parcel is ideally suited to meet many of the town’s needs.

The level terrain at the front of the property, free of ledge or wetlands, affords an excellent site for a number of full-sized, multipurpose and/or dedicated fields. This will alleviate pressure on Sheldon Field, allowing for its restoration and improvement. The remainder lends itself to trails and would provide Killingworth with its only direct access to 5500 acres of Cockaponset State Forest.

Killingworth is already woefully deficient in playing fields for our children. Residents of all ages value trails where they can hike or ride. Purchase of the Wettish property will benefit us all, not only by providing new facilities for recreation but also by helping preserve the uniquely desirable character of our town.

Very truly yours,
Gwenne Lally, Vice Chair

The Killingworth Field Study Committee:
